Final Fantasy 6 Remake Would Require 4 or 5 Games, Says Yoshi-P

Yoshi-P says a Final Fantasy 6, 8 and 9 remake matching FF7 Remake's scale could span four or five games to do the game justice

Story Highlights

  • Naoki Yoshida believes a comparable Final Fantasy 6, 8, and 9 remake could require four or five games.
  • Naoki Hamaguchi said Final Fantasy 6 is the reason he works in the games industry.
  • Hamaguchi further added that it doesn’t mean he will be the director of the Final Fantasy 6 remake.

Speaking during Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, alongside Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi, Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P, addressed what it would take to remake Final Fantasy 6, 7 and 9.

Final Fantasy 6, 7 & 9 Would Be A Massive Remake

Yoshida estimated that rebuilding these classics at a scale comparable to the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 remake series could require four or five individual games.

Look at Final Fantasy 6. It’s such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense, and the same applies for other titles like Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 9

He further weighed in on how many games it would take to remake these games.

if we did remake those other titles, we’d probably end up having to release them in four instalments, or maybe even five instalments.”

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake demonstrates just how quickly that scope can grow. Square Enix turned only 6 hours of the original Final Fantasy 7 into Final Fantasy 7 Remake before continuing the story in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the upcoming Revelations.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Also Clarified That He Won’t Be Attached To The Project

Speaking of Final Fantasy 7 remakes, Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, also said Final Fantasy 6 was the reason he started working in this industry, but that doesn’t mean he will be the guy spearheading the project.

“I’ve given this answer to a lot of media interviews, and it is also a Square Enix title so apologies for that, but Final Fantasy 6 is the reason I wanted to work in games so that always has a special place in my heart,

He further clarified that this doesn’t mean he will be remaking Final Fantasy 6.

“But every time I give that answer to a journalist or someone, the next day there’s an article online saying ‘Hamaguchi will be remaking Final Fantasy 6’. So I also say ‘no, I am not’ at the same time,”

For now, Yoshida’s comments underline the central problem: doing Final Fantasy 6 justice with modern AAA production values would take a staggering amount of time and resources.
