Gearbox Software Might Have Another Borderlands In the Works

The clues are crystal clear

The Borderlands series is not your average RPG first-person shooter that represents some semblance of normalcy. We’re talking about a futuristic sci-fi environment setting drawing heavy inspiration from the west. Players can choose from hordes and hordes of weaponry in typical role-playing game fashion as more and more areas of the Borderlands wasteland are explored.

The loot-driven gameplay is what keeps Borderlands ever-enticing. The latest iteration in the franchise was released back in September 2019 and now fans have been drooling over a sequel ever since. Gearbox Software—the developer—does keep Borderlands 3 fresh with new content on a regular basis, but that isn’t enough for most of the fan base.

Quite fortunately, the developer might have just confirmed that another Borderlands game is in the works. In the worst-case scenario that it’s not Borderlands, then it’s probably another AAA title for the line-up of next-gen consoles.

Some time ago, numerous rumors had made their way online suggesting that the next Borderland’s game is being co-developed. Shunning those false claims, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford took to Twitter and said, “I am told of rumors that Gearbox is “assisting” or “co-developing” another Borderlands game (or a new spin-off game). These rumors are NOT accurate. Gearbox is lead dev of any future games in the Borderlands franchise (or any Borderlands adjacent games) with no co-development.”

Subsequently, he said that they are working on some “amazing stuff” that will make fans happy and keep them satisfied. Lastly, Pitchford said, “If anyone out there has Skills-To-Pay-Bills and wants to get in on some Borderlands action, we’re working on the big one.”

The “big one” here definitely specifies a AAA game in development. Pitchford made that statement to indicate a bevy of job postings going live on the official website of Gearbox Software. Leaving subtle hints, the “Enemy Designer” opening’s “Key Responsibilities” section has a clear-cut description of what’s underway at Gearbox HQ. Take a look at the following screenshot.

The first responsibility requirement reads, “Design, build, and iterate enemies and other AI content for a multi-platform AAA FPS.” A strong inclination is towards Borderlands 4 here, but we cannot assume with total confirmation that there’s no other game that could be under development at the moment. It seems that only time will tell the rest of the tale.
