Gran Turismo 7 Creator Says It Takes 270 Days To Make Each Car From Scratch

The company's current goal of 60 cars a year seems a bit hard to achieve.

How long do you think it takes to create one car in Gran Turismo 7? In a shocking interview with the press, it was stated that it takes 270 days to make one car in the game from scratch.

This eye-opening revelation was made by none other than CEO Kazunori Yamauchi, who is also the creator of the infamous racing game.

MAJOR TAKEAWAYS

  • Gran Turismo 7 is one of the most well-recognized PlayStation exclusive games.
  • In a recent interview, it was stated that it takes up to 270 days to make a car from the ground up.
  • This is the main reason why the game only has a roster of 400 cars as opposed to the previous games.

The 25th anniversary of the Gran Turismo franchise marked an auspicious occasion for Polyphony Digital. In honor of the event, the company offered an office tour to the Japanese press. During these press tours, the CEO also gave multiple interviews with different media outlets.

During one of these interviews, Impress was able to dig out some interesting information about potential upcoming games. Kazunori Yamauchi talked about the vision Gran Turismo wants to emulate in their games, like introducing SUVs that have become more common in recent years.

There was also discourse about the fact that a lot of Gran Turismo fans did not take the eighth installment well. There were claims that the car roster had heavily decreased when compared with the previous installment.

Since the debut of the game back in March of last year, there has been a lot of noise about introducing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 4 again. However, Kazunori Yamauchi said that the developers were already stretched thin and the lack of adequate resources made it unlikely. It was stated that it takes their developers 270 days to make one model.

He further elaborated by saying that he acknowledges that Gran Turismo 7 only has 400 cars as opposed to Gran Turismo 5 and 6, which have 1000. He said, “The current production pace is about 60 units per year,” meaning that it may be unlikely for the game to reach the level of its predecessors.

When asked if there would be any new models added to Gran Turismo 7, Impress was only able to get a cryptic answer. Yamauchi said,” What do you think?”

The interview has left the fanbase divided. While many fans agree that they would prefer a meticulously crafted car no matter how long it might take.

On the other hand, many stated that the company has at least 200 employees, so a target of only 60 units per year seems a little low. Many speculate that the number 270 seems heavily inflated and, realistically, should only take the developers a month maximum.

Gran Turismo 7 is one of the most heavily decorated racing games. It has recently bagged the title of The Game Award for Best Sports/Racing Game.

The game received an update in October, bringing 4 new cars into the mix. Regardless of the negative press, Gran Turismo 7 has managed to become the top-selling game in France.
