GTA 6 Scammers Have Already Created Fake PC Downloads

A ploy all too common in the gaming industry.

Story Highlights

  • With the reveal of the new GTA 6 teaser trailer, scammers have already started to create fake PC downloads.
  • The downloadable files are most likely malware to infect the PCs of naive gamers who fall for it.
  • It is highly advised to avoid such tricks since the open-world title by Rockstar will come out in 2025.

The GTA 6 trailer reveal has brought a slew of excitement among the fans. But some bad actors have already begun taking advantage of the situation. As shared by the Redditor da13371337bpf on the r/pcmasterrace subreddit, scammers have allegedly created fake PC downloads to lure gamers in. These files —pretending to be fake GTA 6 set-ups— are likely full of malware that is harmful to PCs.

Trying to download the title may land your PC in some deep trouble due to the malicious software. However, the bad actor could just be repacking another title instead of fooling others into downloading the games. Unfortunately, details on the exact scam and its specifics are unknown. At the end of the day, it could be anything but good.

Most people have taken the shoddy attempt to scam gamers with humor. Reddit users have made fun of the scammers with sly remarks, while others wonder who would actually fall for something this obvious. Regardless, many naive gamers are prone to scams like this; sometimes, our impatience and desperation for games can compel us to make drastic choices that lead to harm after all.

The Reddit user RichardK1234 clarified that they had fallen for a ploy like this in the past as a kid. The user ended up downloading files for the alleged Far Cry 6, only to end up with a 30 to 40 GB malicious file. All in all, we highly advise against clicking and downloading any files that talk about installing GTA 6. Rockstar Games has only announced the entry, and it will take a good two years before it’s ready even for a console launch.

The GTA 6 teaser has reached over 127 million views at the time of writing, with likes climbing up to 10 million. It is fair to say that the teaser alone has left a mark on us and broken many records. It showcases the mesmerizing beaches of fictional Florida, including lively urban cities, neon-filled nightlife, diverse wildlife, and more. The title will satirize Florida; even the whole trailer was inspired by real-life events.

Grand Theft Auto 6 by Rockstar Games is finally set to release in 2025 on an unknown date. The publisher also confirmed the platforms in a press release. We can expect to play on current-gen consoles, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. No PC release has been announced by the devs so far. Judging Rockstar Games by past experiences, GTA 6 will likely launch on PC when at least a year elapses after the console launch.
