This Mod Restores Metal Gear Solid 1’s Voice Acting In The Twin Snakes

Sneak around again like its 1998.

                                                                             Story Highlights

  • Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes is often criticized for its re-recorded dialogue that feels much worse than the original PS1 dialogue.
  • A mod by José Mellinas restores the voice acting of the original Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.
  • The mod is currently unavailable for download.

A mod in the works by José Mellinas attempts to restore the voice acting of the original Metal Gear Solid from 1998 to its 2004 GameCube remake Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. José showed a small glimpse of it in action with footage from the end of Sniper Wolf’s final boss fight in Metal Gear Solid 1 showcasing her monologue in her original pre-remake voice.

He also shows another moment from the game that shows Otacon’s iconic confrontation with Snake, voiced by none other than Christopher Randolph who has played all variations of the character from the very first game.

The mod itself is currently unavailable for download as it is supposedly still in development.

The Metal Gear games are not unfamiliar with the concept of modding, as back in last year, a modder released a mod for MGS 2 Substance that added the third-person camera from MGS 3 Subsistence into the game, as well as a reverse mod that put Metal Gear’s Solid Snake into the dilapidated halls of the Spencer Mansion from Resident Evil 1.

The Twin Snakes made certain revisions to the original game’s script, and while it reprises largely the same voice cast the voice acting itself is considered significantly worse in the remake due to sounding forced and unnatural.

The original Metal Gear Solid on the other hand is lauded for its high quality and ahead-of-its-time voice acting, being one of the games to actually raise the bar in video game acting at the time, and for good reason too, even today one of the most surprising things about the game is how well its voice acting has held up over the years.

The Twin Snakes is an often-maligned remake of the original game criticized due to its tonal and gameplay liberties. The game received negative criticism from fans of the original for deviating too much from the vision of the original game, a surprise considering series director Hideo Kojima himself was involved in the development of this game.

However, the game launched to a very positive reception from critics for its innovations over the original game and all the improvements brought over from MGS 2 Sons of Liberty as well as its faithful interpretation of the original game’s storyline. Let’s hope we Metal Gear fans can finally eat well once Konami finishes cooking up whatever they’re making in there.
