Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sold 1 Million Copies On Launch Day

Capcom's first new mainline Onimusha in 20 years is off to a very strong start.

Story Highlights

  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over 1 million copies worldwide on its launch day.
  • The milestone pushes total Onimusha series sales past 10 million units.
  • It’s the first new mainline entry in the series in more than 20 years.

Capcom confirmed the numbers in an investor release: “Worldwide sales of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the latest title in the series, have surpassed 1 million units on the first day of its release. Driven by the performance of this title, cumulative sales of the Onimusha series have now surpassed 10 million units.”

A Big Return For A Dormant Series

CAPCOM
Onimusha hasn’t had an entry in over 20 years.

It’s the series’ first mainline entry since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams launched back in 2006, and a strong one to reawaken it with. The game casts players in the role of Miyamoto Musashi (modeled after Toshiro Mifune), fighting through a demon-infested version of Edo-era Kyoto with sword combat built around dodges, parries, and Issen. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched September 4 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC.

How Capcom Got There

CAPCOM
Onimusha launched to a great reception.

Capcom credited its pre-launch push, multiple public demos and hands-on exhibitions, for helping the game reach beyond the series’ existing fanbase. The company also framed the launch as proof of a broader strategy: alongside its usual slate of major annual releases, Capcom said it’s focused on “re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” with Onimusha as the clearest example yet of that bet paying off.
