The reboot of the action-adventure series Perfect Dark has been in development for several years now. Not much has been revealed about the game. But now a job listing from Crystal Dynamics, the studio developing the game, has revealed that the game may have both the third-person and first-person perspectives.
As spotted by a Twitter user, @EmilyHargreavs, the studio is looking for a Lead Gameplay Animator “to come and be part of the future of Perfect Dark.” Everything on the listing seems to be run-of-the-mill. But one part that caught Emily’s eye was the experience requirement for the job.
“To be considered for this role” the applicant is required “deep knowledge” of “third-and first-person” gameplay systems. The candidate is also required extensive “experience with weapons, traversal, melee, and ranged weapon” in both the first- and third-person perspectives.
This has led the internet to assume that the reboot of Perfect Dark might have both the first-person and third-person perspectives, unlike the original series which is a first-person shooter. The games in the series have been remastered in the past but this is the first time it is being rebooted.
The Perfect Dark series was originally developed by Rare. It was dubbed the successor of GoldenEye 007. The series has seen the release of 4 games. The first, also known as Perfect Dark(N64), was released exclusively on Nintendo 64 in 2000.
The second game, Perfect Dark(GBC), was released for Game Boy Color. It was also released in 2000 as a prequel to the first game. The third game, Perfect Dark Zero, was an Xbox exclusive released in 2005. The series’ last release was in 2010 when Perfect Dark(N64)’s was remastered for Xbox 360.
The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics are the two studios developing the Perfect Dark reboot. The Initiative, a subsidiary of the Xbox Game Studios, has a history of remastering older games, as the studio has already worked on the revival of the 2013 Tomb Raider game.
The Perfect Dark reboot was first rumored to be under development in 2018. It was officially announced during The Games Awards in 2020 with the release of a teaser trailer.
The development of the reboot has faced several hiccups. From the several senior The Initiative programmers leaving to the change of ownership of Crystal Dynamics studio.
The Covid-19 pandemic impacted the game’s development as well. But, as revealed first by Jez Corden in August last year and then by Xbox Game Studios’ boss in November, the development of the game has been going smoothly. But no specific timeframe for the Perfect Dark (reboot) release has been provided by the developers.
The studio also hasn’t said anything about the game having a third-person perspective. So it is important to take these speculations with caution, despite the information on the job listing suggesting otherwise.
Perfect Dark(reboot), unlike its predecessors, won’t be a console exclusive. The game will be released for PC and Xbox Series X|S at an unannounced date.
