Activision Suffers A Massive Hack; Sensitive Employee Info Leaked And More

The breach allegedly does not affect user data or accounts.

Story Highlights

  • Activision has been hit by a large data breach, as recently reported by a major website that collects malware source codes and important documents.
  • The hacker was able to gain access to personal employee details through a single phishing attack, which caused the prominent data to be compromised.
  • A lot of game-related data was also revealed in the hack, like seasonal content, events, bundles, and more. Future games have also allegedly been found in the leak.
  • Activision has not officially commented on the hack, and it exercised silence on the initial data breach, likely because it did not affect users.

Activision has suffered a slew of data breaches and hacks in the past, causing the company, including its games and users, to suffer serious damage. The giant conglomerate reportedly also experienced a massive internal hack recently, which has led to some dire documents and secretive content coming to light.

Activision has been hit by an internal data breach, which has brought details like sensitive employee information. Game-related content details dating to November 17th, 2023, also appeared out of the curtains. The info was revealed on Twitter by the prolific insider that secures malware and leaked documents, vx-underground.

The unknown hacker was able to gain access to a “privileged user on the network” and gained control of “sensitive work place documents” The hacker notably gained access to secret docs on December 4th, 2022, and after 2 months, the details have finally emerged.

The sensitive employee info is likely to contain personal details; for instance, full names, addresses, passwords, salaries, and more may have been possibly leaked. It appears only one user was phished, and the others were able to recognize the phishing attempt and save themselves, as noted by the leaker.

However, the single attack was enough for all the employee details to surface, which makes sense considering the device containing the information was compromised in the attack.

The hack has also led to in-game leaks to surface, such as plans for future content regarding Activision’s games. In other words, particulars about the future of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, such as seasonal content have also appeared online.

Details regarding the games’ upcoming DLCs, bundles, events, and more were unveiled. Moreover, future games also allegedly emerged because of the data breach. Despite the massive hack attempt, nothing too explicit or immediate was leaked concerning the future games.

It appears that the hacker was more interested in just annoying the employees and trying to trick them after gaining access to Activisions’ Slack workplace. According to the insider, the hack was not reported to the studio’s information security team, which may have amplified the consequences of the data breach.

Activision had not officially announced the hack to let the community know, which is surprising considering the massive scale of the data breach. However, the company likely decided to stay silent because the data breach only concerned the employees and not the users’ accounts and games.

The massive company has still not yet commented on the issue, but it may share a statement in the future after the data breach spreads ablaze online. We suggest taking the news with a grain of salt in the meantime in case the rumor turns out to be false.

Activision was hit by one of the biggest data breaches in 2020, which also highly affected users spanning across the most popular games using Activision accounts. Over 500,000 accounts were said to be affected, and its effects are still felt to this day. However, the company directly denied the accusations despite the major reports.
