Sega Genesis Is Getting A New 2D Shoot-Em-Up From Yuzo Koshiro

The legendary composer is working with his company Ancient Corp. to make this side-scrolling adventure.

The 2D games of the 80s are the reason gaming is what it is now. Video games would have never become popular without the base these side-scrollers gave us, and they still have a huge fan base in the modern world.

Many developers make 2D games for players and now one of them is Yuzo Koshiro who is making a side-scrolling shoot-em-up for the Sega Genesis.

More tenured players might already be familiar with who Koshiro is. The legendary composer made his mark on the industry by composing the Streets of Rage series for SEGA. Koshiro is also a developer but hasn’t worked for some time, but it looks like he is back now.

Major Takeaways:

  • Legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro is making a 2D side-scrolling shoot-em-up.
  • Koshiro is also developing the game and will release it on the Sega Genesis.
  • The composer has returned to developing games after 28 years.

Yuzo Koshiro announced this new game via a Tweet from his official Twitter account. In the Tweet, he said that the game might look like an old 80s shoot-em-up, but is actually brand new. Koshiro said that he is making the soundtrack of the game and is also a game designer on it.

That is a huge deal for fans as he is returning to development for the first time since Beyond Oasis. For context, Beyond Oasis came out in 1994, almost 28 years ago. Hence, it has been a long break for Koshiro and fans are excited to see him return.

Ancient Corp., Yuzo Koshiro’s development company, is working with him to develop this title. In the Tweet, Koshiro mentioned that the game will release on the Sega Genesis and the Mega Drive. If you don’t know, Mega Drive is the name of the console outside North America.

Players are right to be excited about this game as Yuzo Koshiro has done acclaimed work in the industry. Besides Streets of Rage, he has composed music for the Shenmue series, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Revenge of Shinobi. Koshiro also composed arrangements for the Super Smash Bros. franchise, Batman Returns and Star Wars: Attack on the Death Star.

As you can see, the composer has a lot of credit in the bank, especially for Sega titles in the 80s and 90s. But even with all of that, his most significant contribution has been to the Streets of Rage series. He has composed all 4 games in the series, including the commercially successful 4th game in 2020.

2D side-scrolling adventures are really the backbone of gaming. Most gamers and developers grew up playing these titles, hence they serve as the foundation for everything we play today. It is one art that should never die and seeing people like Yuzo Koshiro upholding it is nice to see.
