The entry is called Yakuza Wars.

Story Highlights

  • Sega has already trademarked a new Like a Dragon game in Japan called Yakuza Wars.
  • The trademark was filed on July 26, 2024, and has now appeared in the Chizai Watch database.
  • The new filing allegedly confirms that RGG Studio is already developing a new entry in the IP.

As found by the gaming deal whisperer, Wario64, on Twitter, Sega has already trademarked a new Like a Dragon game in Japan. The trademark was filed under the name “Yakuza Wars” on July 26 of this year and has now been added to the Chizai Watch database for everyone to see. The tags used in the trademark confirm that it’s for gaming software, but not much else has been confirmed in the filing, as anyone would expect.

Another factor confirms that Sega filed the Yakuza Wars trademark for the Like a Dragon franchise. The Japanese gaming site GameWatch reported in April 2024 that RGG Studio was already hiring actors and actresses for the next Like a Dragon entry. However, series producer Masayoshi Yokoyama added that this new project would not be related to the Yakuza 3 remake.

Not Much Is Known About The New Yakuza Game

The trademark could imply a new Yakuza sequel or a spin-off title, but the naming scheme makes no sense. Sega has been trying to rebrand the series to “Like a Dragon” for Western audiences, so reverting back to it would only confuse the fans. Although, RGG Studio could always go for another name for the final release.

All in all, it is best to take the trademark with a grain of salt. It’s not unusual for RGG Studio to begin working on the new Yakuza entry, but we know next to nothing about its existence for now. It’s expected since Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth only came out earlier this year and went on to sell in the millions. It’s possible we won’t hear anything substantial about the franchise for the rest of this year.
