Several senior staff members from the development team of the RPG looter shooter “Borderlands 3” are confirmed to be leaving Gearbox to work on a new project together. Paul Sage took it to LinkedIn and wrote “Today was my last day at Gearbox Studios. With an incredible team, we launched one of the top selling games in 2019 to much acclaim, and it remains a game I am very proud of.”
He further wrote “Speaking of the future, for the first time in many years the details surrounding my career are uncertain, nevertheless I am excited about that future. As has been reported, I left the studio with other amazingly talented developers who are at the top of their skillset within the industry.
“I cannot stress enough what a rarity finding such a group of diverse talent is like, but even better is having the privilege to be a part of that group. Together we share many common values including a passion for video games and a deep respect for other developers.”
“When there is more to say, and there will be more to say, there will be an official announcement. For now, it is time to decompress, tell my family I love them and then get down to doing something truly special and unique.”
The following members have now left Gearbox, mostly confirmed through their LinkedIn’s and report.
- Paul Sage – Creative Director
- Christopher Brock – Senior Producer
- Scott Kester – Art Director
- Keith Schuler – Lead Mission Designer
- Kevin Penrod – Lead Character Artist
- Chris Strasz – UX Direcor
The news was internally announced almost 2 weeks ago with a total of seven departures from the team.
According to a statement by Gearbox founder and CEO Randy Pitchford, the staff members are supposedly leaving “on the best of terms“.
“Before their transition, the group was part of a not-yet-announced pre-production team and their departure will cause minimal disruption in our current plans” Pitchford said.
It is not yet confirmed whether this new title in pre-production is Borderlands 4 or an entirely new IP and whatever it is, it is entirely up to speculation at this point.
Pitchford also stated that most of their attention and focus right now is on their new title Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, a fantasy spin off set in the Borderlands universe starring the titular Tiny Tina.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is reportedly coming out Early 2022 and Gearbox is confident on the game’s release date with Randy Pitchford stating that:
“The bulk of our attention at the moment is dedicated to finishing ‘[Tiny Tina’s] Wonderlands, which is on-track.”
The game is confirmed to have a very stacked cast featuring major industry talents like Ashly Burch as the titular Tiny Tina, Andy Samberg as Captain Valentine, Wanda Sykes as Frette, and Will Arnett as the antagonist Dragon Lord. In classic Borderlands fashion, it’s going to be a story-driven co-op experience with up to four players as you journey across a high fantasy world according to Gearbox.
