Shadow Of The Erdtree Is Now The Highest Rated DLC In Gaming History

Off to a wild start, Tarnished.

Story Highlights

  • Elden Ring, a phenomenal action RPG, was released to great fanfare in 2022, winning GOTY subsequently.
  • The game’s DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, is now out as well, and has been received with more passion.
  • According to aggregate reviews, the DLC ranks above its counterparts throughout gaming history.

The reviews are in, and it looks like FromSoftware is back on top again, although to no one’s surprise. Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is the base game’s first and only expansion, boasting a ton of content in the name of new areas, boss fights, and more, and apparently, it’s clocked a stellar 95 Metascore on review aggregate platform Metacritic, releasing no more than a day ago.

Said Metascore takes 59 reviews from critics into account.

To put things into perspective, let’s take a look at some of the other DLCs in gaming that are considered the “best.” When one talks about those, they clearly point to the likes of The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine, Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty, and Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters, all of which comprise 92, 89, and 87 Metascores respectively.

Shadow Of The Erdtree Is Elden Ring’s Send-Off

With FromSoftware doing what it does best, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is off to a monumental start, hitting figures bigger than what most DLCs are capable of in terms of review ratings, though we’re yet to receive an update on the sales front. In addition, no other launch in 2024 has been rated a 95 Metascore so far, making Shadow of the Erdtree the best-rated overall release this year as well.

eXputer’s 5/5 review of the expansion holds it in high regard, with author Haris Umer remarking,

Shadow of the Erdtree improves upon the already perfect Elden Ring with the addition of new weapons, regions, and bosses.”

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree was launched on June 20, 2024, for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The base game, Elden Ring, traces its release back to February 2022, earning the title of “The Greatest Soulsborne Game Ever Made” over at the site.

To access Shadow of the Erdtree, you need to defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood, found at Mohgwyn Palace. Here’s a quick and easy guide that’ll help you get the better of Mohg, just in case you haven’t gotten around to beating him already.
