Sony Files Patent for a Controller With Proximity Sensors

The future of PlayStation VR is starting to gather shape

Sony has filed a patent with the title, “Information Processing Apparatus, Information Processing System, Controller Device, Information Processing Method, and Program,” but it’s only the patent’s abstract that makes some sense and hints toward a possible PlayStation VR2 controller.

The abstract reads that the patent is for a “controller device equipped with proximity sensors.” This is followed by a handful of statements that describe what procedures will this controller work with. We can see a couple of methods to be implemented, primarily one that involves some sort of trial-and-error.

In the “Claims” section of the patent, it has been mentioned that proximity sensors in this controller will be installed for at least each respective finger of the user. Other major components include a fixing material and a control unit that “outputs information.”

Taking into account the current-gen PlayStation VR, it’s been almost 5 years since the technology made its way to the realm of gaming. Rest assured, it’s no surprise that this piece of tech is getting a bit outdated for what Sony’s main console has to offer with an array of powerful specs.

Therefore, this is high time for a VR upgrade, possibly a PlayStation VR2 with top-end controllers that bridge the gap between virtual reality and actual reality. With this recently filed patent, it seems that progress is verily underway, and the PlayStation 5 will soon come bundled with a newer VR set.
