One of the individuals who purchased the source code tried to sell it for profit. When the individual could not sell the source code for a profit, they decided to leak it over the internet. Note that the GTA 5 source code also included Bully 2 files, as reports claimed. Recently, Insomniac Games also suffered a major leak, which risked the private information of several employees as well as highly confidential details about the company and their upcoming games.

Why The Source Code Getting Leaked Matters Significantly

The GTA 5 launched about a decade ago, but it is still an extremely popular game to this day. The source code being publicly leaked means that modders will now be able to make malicious mods. Furthermore, the source code being publicly available may also reveal confidential information about the game or the company, which may also hurt the company’s future.

The source code’s availability also makes your PC vulnerable to many malicious attacks, including viruses, which may make the game unable to run at all. Additionally, hundreds of developers spent years writing up the source code, and having it just publicly available for anyone to temper with also hurts the morale of the developers.

Rockstar Games has also recently released a trailer for GTA 6, the next iteration in the franchise that is set to launch sometime in 2025 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X.
