Sony Has Allegedly Approached CD Projekt Red “Multiple Times” For Possible Acquisition

According to internet speculation, CD Projekt Red has been approached by Sony multiple times for an acquisition offer. While the rumors are unsubstantiated, they are backed up by industry insiders. An acquisition of CDPR would further escalate the acquisition wars between Sony and Microsoft.

According to industry analyst Rythian, in response to the acquisition rumors, CDPR was approached numerous times by Sony.

He claims one of the reasons that CDPR announced many new titles in development was to increase their valuation before a potential acquisition. But this does not mean for certain that Sony will acquire CD Projekt Red. Companies have talks with each other all the time. 

Earlier this month CDPR announced a slew of titles, 2 new Witcher games, a new IP, and a new Cyberpunk game in development. The studio also expressed interest in expanding in film and TV after the success of the animated Netflix series Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

While these are just rumors, Microsoft and Sony have been in a fight to acquire studios. Microsoft had announced its plans to acquire Activision Blizzard for nearly 70 billion dollars, an acquisition that Sony is fighting in court. Microsoft also recently acquire Bethesda for 7.5 billion, making Starfield an exclusive title. 

Sony has responded with acquisitions of its own. Early this year they closed on their acquisition of Bungie, the original developers of the HALO franchise for nearly 5 billion dollars.

We will have to wait and see if Sony will be bold enough to acquire CDPR. Acquisition talks are often kept quiet, and even many prominent journalists are left in the dark as suitors, lawyers, and bankers hold these discussions under lock and key.

Do not take the Sony rumor as a fact, but be aware that companies are always looking to acquire others, there may be truth to these rumors. For example, earlier this year EA had acquisition talks with Disney, Amazon, Apple, and more.
