The Game Developers Conference’s annual survey regarding the gaming industry has revealed that many developers are concerned about generative AI’s ethical impact on the game industry. The survey covered that 56% of developers are worried about future layoffs.
According to the survey, 84% of the respondents were concerned about the ethics of using generative AI, while 12% of the respondents revealed that they had no concerns. As per the report, many respondents were concerned that the use of generative AI leads to more layoffs at game companies, while others were concerned about the use of data obtained without the creator’s consent.

Generative AI has played a significant role in the game industry since last year. According to the survey, over 49% of respondents revealed that their company had been using generative AI. The use of generative AI is mostly common among indie developers, as it helps in speeding up the development process. Despite the growing usage of generative AI, four out of five developers were worried about AI ethics.
Among other results, the survey revealed a +26% increase in games with accessibility measures. Furthermore, over 66% of the respondents indicated that they’re currently developing a project for PC, while 35% of developers were presently working on a project for PlayStation 5, and 34% of the respondents were working on a project for Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
