Against the backdrop of rumours of the imminent announcement of Apple’s much anticipated VR headset, a few images of have of the VR headset have supposedly been leaked online. The leaked images show a few internal components of Apple’s VR headset. The leak is the first hardware leak of the VR headset. MrWhite uploaded the leaked photos on his Twitter account.
MrWhite is a renowned Apple insider, and in the past, he has leaked legitimate photos of Apple’s prototypes. The pics leaked and uploaded by him show nothing of the design of Apple’s VR headset. The leaked photos supposedly show what appears to be a connector for the front lens. Some people estimated the size of the connectors rather smaller than usual.
It prompted them to speculate the actual size of Apple’s VR headset to be between 6-7 inches. This would mean the size of the headset might be a lot smaller than conventional VR headsets. One of the photos shows the VR headsets mic. The mic resembles a lot like the one present in Apple’s Homepod.
This put into question the authenticity of the supposed leak. The leak’s legitimacy was further undermined because the leaker, MrWhite, did not specify what these photos show. But the build and design of the leaked components and the time of the leaks have given people enough incentive to speculate. And looking at the track record of MrWhite, the photos are surely from one of Apple’s unannounced projects.
Apple’s VR headset was first rumoured to be in development in November last year. The VR headset is said to be mixed reality because it is said to support both AR and VR. Hence it is also known as AR/VR headset. It has not yet been announced by Apple but the rumours suggest it might be by the end of 2023.
The VR headset will be poised to compete against Meta Quest 1 and 2, PSVR and PSVR2. Apple’s VR headset will initially cost around $3k, the price most people are really uncomfortable with. But an Apple analyst has suggested that the company is working on both high-end and low-end VR headsets.
He believes that low-end headsets will be in the market by 2025. The leaks have too many holes to be considered legitimate. So it is probably wiser to take these speculations with a grain of salt.
