After buying 1C Entertainment just a few days ago, Tencent opens up its wallet yet again as another studio joins the extensive lineup of devs that have received funding from the Chinese giant. The studio in question is Offworld Industries, a Canadian studio headquartered in Vancouver. The indie developer, which was formed back in 2014 by former modders, is well known for developing military shooter Beyond the Wire, and Squad, another FPS title.
Tencent has acquired a minority stake in the studio for an undisclosed sum, and Tencent’s General Manager of Shooting Games Gram Xu is set to join Offworld Industries’ board of directors.
“We see Tencent’s investment as a wonderful validation of both our track record for bringing engaging PC shooters to market and our long-term vision for the studio,” is what Offworld’s Director of Finance Kristine Kakuno had to say.
Tencent prides itself on investing in talented studios at all levels. We’re happy to contribute to the growth of Offworld’s future and help provide the insights needed for the studio to reach its full potential,” said Tencent’s STC team regarding Offworld Industries and their expertise.
The exchange of experience and expertise is mutual as the Offworld team also intends to tap into the “wealth of experience with a proven track record” of Tencent’s shooting and creative team (STC).
