Ubisoft Massive’s Future Games Could Include Monetization

This includes Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and their upcoming Star Wars game.

Massive Entertainment, a Ubisoft studio is hard at work developing 2 AAA titles. The first is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a game set in James Cameron’s Avatar universe. The second is an untitled open-world narrative Star Wars game. Massive also developed Far Cry 3 as well as The Division Series.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has been in development since 2017 and is set to release sometime this year. Ubisoft‘s partnership with Lucasfilm to create a Star Wars game was announced in 2021, with more news to follow this year.

According to a job posting, Ubisoft may be looking for ways to monetize its upcoming titles.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an open-world experience set in James Cameron’s Avatar universe and developed by Ubisoft Massive. With the popularity of Avatar: The Way of Water and its success at the box office, Frontiers of Pandora has strong legs to stand on as people regain their interest in the Avatar universe.

Frontiers of Pandora is set around a year before Avatar: The Way of Water. The game takes place sometime between the 1-year flashback from the beginning of the film and the events of the movie. 

 It is likely any microtransactions would be cosmetics as they are in many Ubisoft titles. There will be no multiplayer component in Frontiers of Pandora so any MTX couldn’t be related to Battle Passes or virtual currencies.

Ubisoft Massive’s other major upcoming title is their open-world Star Wars game. Little is known about the game, other than we know that it is in development. It will be an open-world narrative-driven game. It is unknown if there will be multiplayer but we may find out more about the game this year. 

Gamers have a sour taste from microtransactions, but one thing many do not realize is how necessary they are for game developers to be profitable. When the price of a new game shifts from $60-$70 in 2 decades, studios must find other ways to break even.

Game development is expensive, especially when the project is a major AAA-licensed IP. Gamers may often complain about microtransactions, but they will buy them regardless. After all, Fortnite, Apex, and Warzone aren’t free to play for no reason. 

Microtransactions don’t always have to be bad, when done tastefully they can improve the overall experience. It seems that Ubisoft is taking a more justified and consumer-friendly route from the language in the job posting.

As Massive has said, they want someone who can “shape strategies that boost profitability while respecting our players and the essence of each game.”

Of course, there are many cases where microtransactions have completely ruined experiences for consumers. This was the case for Star Wars Battlefront II, whose microtransaction system caused so much controversy legislators around the world had to get involved.

Massive Entertainment has a strong history of releasing great titles. There is no doubt that the Ubisoft Massive team will put their heart and soul into working on games based on some of the biggest film IP.
