Modern Warfare 2 Makes $1 Billion In First 10 Days, Becomes COD’s Biggest Launch

Selling $1 billion in 10 days, Modern Warfare 2 is only second to GTA V.

Modern Warfare 2 is a hit, and it may be one of the biggest of all time. According to Activision, Modern Warfare 2 has made $1 billion within 10 days of release. It is the biggest Call of Duty launch of all time, surpassing the previous record of 15 days to hit 1 billion by 2012’s Black Ops II.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 is the fastest-selling COD game of all time.
  • MW2 made $1 billion in 10 days of release.
  • The game’s revenue at release is second only to Grand Theft Auto V.

Modern Warfare 2 made $800 million within 3 days of release, according to Activision. This makes it not only the biggest media release of 2022, but it is also the second-biggest video game release of all time. 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V sold $1 billion in 3 days.

Activision executives spoke on the success of the game in a press release.

“Our developers, along with our entire Activision Blizzard team, are the backbone of our unwavering commitment to serve our hundreds of millions of players around the world. I am so proud of the extraordinary efforts from our Call of Duty teams and the records they have achieved with Modern Warfare II. Connecting the world through joy, fun and the thrill of competition is the key to our success. Modern Warfare II has provided this to millions of players faster and with greater satisfaction than ever before,” – Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard.

“The incredible momentum driving Modern Warfare II is a direct reflection of the energy and passion of the Call of Duty community as we look ahead to an unprecedented level of support for Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0’s launch next week, we are motivated to deliver again for the best player community in the world.” – Johanna Faries, General Manager, Call of Duty

According to Activision, over 100 million hours of MWII have been played in over 1 billion matches. Warzone 2 will launch for MWII on November 16th, which will greatly increase revenue for Activision.

2022’s successful COD launch is a strong reminder that the Call of Duty brand is still strong. Not only by tapping into the nostalgia of the original MW2, but by developing a quality game worth its sales figures.

This is a strong contrast to last year’s Call of Duty Vanguard, a game that did not sell well and many found to be uninspired and lacking compared to previous titles.

We will have to see what Activision has in store for the COD franchise in the future.
