Epic Games Is Launching New “Cabined Accounts” For Kids

The accounts will provide a more safe experience for younger audiences.

Epic Games has decades of experience in many aspects of the gaming industry. From developing global phenomenons like Fortnite to creating its own store, Epic Games is continually establishing its allure. Among Epic Games’ latest endeavors, the Epic Games store could eventually prove to be a potential Steam competitor.

Epic Games Store is a relatively new curated storefront for PC and Mac. It is still expanding its features and deals, adding many fan-requested features, like the recently introduced “top played section. The popular market for gamers and developers alike is now introducing a whole new account system for kids.

Epic Games’ new Cabined Accounts” is specifically designed with younger audiences using the Store or Launcher in mind to ensure a safer experience. In other words, children can play popular games, such as Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys, securely without worrying about any dangers lurking around the corners online.

Major Takeaway

  • Epic Games Store is getting a new feature targeted toward kids and younger audiences in mind.
  • The new “Cabined Accounts” are created to ensure kids using the Store or Launcher can enjoy their favorite games with more security and handling.
  • The young players will need “Parental Controls” to access specific features, and the account will stay cabined until the parents set up the control.
  • The update will roll out today and also enforce parents to comply with the Parental Control policy designated by Epic Games for its storefront.

The Cabined Accounts will be able to use the Epic Games Store but will be severely limited in the available feature. The additional features will unlock after the parents apply Parental Control, and as per the chosen settings to unlock features, the account will be reverted to a standard account.

The account will be reportedly Cabined if the person in question is under the country’s age of digital consent. The new update by Epic Games will roll out today and persuade parents to subscribe further to Epic Games’ Parental Control Policy.

The giant company articulates, “If a player indicates they are under 13 or their country’s age of digital consent, whichever is higher, their account will be a Cabined Account and they will be asked to provide a parent or guardian’s email address in order to receive consent to access certain features in Epic’s products.

The Cabined Accounts will add extra security measures by disabling many prominent features for younger audiences to ensure no troubles befall them on the platform.

Features like contact with other users, purchasing and trading in-game items, and the like will be restricted. Players will be able to view and access game libraries with Cabined Accounts, but buying new games will not be possible.

Moreover, certain Unreal Engine features will become inaccessible for users until the account is reverted. The display name will also change to show a generated one until it is changed after following the procedure.

As per Epic Games’ FAQ page, the following list of features will be disabled for a Cabined Account:

  • Communicating with other players using voice chat or free text chat
  • Purchasing items with money
  • Downloading games that are not owned by Epic
  • Recommendations based on past activity
  • Email marketing or push notifications
  • Trades in Rocket League
  • Sign in with Epic, including linking accounts to certain external services, such as social media websites or video streaming applications
  • Custom display names
  • SMS-based two-factor authentication

The inclusion of more security features will only make the game, and the launcher, feel more secure for the younger community. The parents will also be able to further rely on the platform and keep a better eye on the account settings of their children.

It is a great step in building a more secure community free of scams targeted at kids.

The Epic Games storefront is designed with gamers and developers in mind, and it offers exclusivity to many great games for players wanting a reason to try the store.
