RimWorld Components And How To Find Them?

Components in RimWorld are one of the many different resources that players will require in order to develop their colonies and build bigger and better pieces of equipment. To be incredibly specific, components are used to craft and repair electrical devices in the game.

As you get deeper and deeper into your playthrough, you will research new technologies and unlock everything from new power generators, advanced weaponry to even RimWorld Hydroponics. And yes, each of these will require a steady source of components, so it’s generally a good idea to make sure that you have a decent supply of the item. This guide focuses on components, but why not check out our RimWorld tips as well.

So with this Components guide, we’ll show you all of the ways you can acquire this essential resource.

RimWorld’s Components Guide

If players choose either the ‘Crashlanded’ or ‘The Rich Explorer’ scenario when beginning a new game, they will start their colonies with exactly 30 units of Components each. The third scenario, ‘Lost Tribe,’ begins with none of this resource, so new players should probably avoid it if possible.

Now 30 units don’t seem like a lot at first glance, but most items you can construct within the starting hours of the game only require around 1-3 units each. As you spend time researching and unlocking more complex machinery however, the amount required for crafting slowly increases as you move up the tech tree.

So players will have to increase their supply to keep up with the demands of their colony. They can either find components out in the world, or they can craft some by themselves. 

Hot To Get Components In RimWorld?

There are a few different sources of Components that players can exploit. You are not guaranteed to find all of these in your particular map, but we will mention what requirements to meet where relevant.

It should also be mentioned that certain sources are extremely limited and do not replenish over time, so make sure to use your stock wisely. With that said, let’s take a look at all the ways you can get Components in the game.

Mine Compacted Machinery

If you decide to start your colony near some mountains or hills, there is a pretty good chance these natural formations will have some mineral deposits. These are easy enough to spot, since they have a different color when compared to the rest of the mountain.

A Compacted Machinery deposit has a brownish color that stands out against the rest of the gray rocks, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find. If you’re looking for a reference, check out the image posted above for exactly what to look for. If you’re still unsure of what a particular mineral is, hovering the mouse over the blocks will also show you it’s name in the lower left corner of the screen.

Now once you spot one of these clusters, go ahead and use the ‘Mine’ order from the Architect Menu to mark the blocks with the resource. Now designate one of your colonists to the task by going into the Work tab. It’s preferred that you assign someone proficient in the Mining skill to get this done quickly and without any losses.

It should take a few moments to mine the assigned blocks, after which you should be left with some Components.

Deconstruct Ship Chunks

As you play through the game, you will receive a notification that some ships parts have crashed nearby every now and then. And sure enough, if you scan your map, a few different Ship Chunks can be seen scattered around randomly. These are an excellent source of components, but they cannot be carried around in their current state. You can only break them down where they are in order to get the resource you require.

To do this, select the chunk you want to harvest and click the ‘Deconstruct’ button that appears in the bottom left of the screen. Any colonist that has been assigned to work in construction will then automatically head over to the location and begin breaking the Ship Chunks down into components.

Be careful though, because these chunks take an extremely long time to deconstruct and your colonist might get attacked in the open. It’s preferred that you send someone proficient in the Construction skill so that they can get this whole thing done quickly.

Trade With Other Colonies

Now, this method is pretty straightforward, so we’ll go over it briefly.

Occasionally, your colonies will be visited by friendly traders from different factions in other parts of the map. They may arrive as individual NPCs or be accompanied by an entire caravan of warriors and civilians.

You can make one of your colonists interact with these traders and purchase any Components that they might have for sale. You can also sell any excess resources or goods you might have and then use the money for making the purchases. That’s all there is to it.

Craft Components Yourself

Crafting Components by yourself might seem like a pretty obvious thing, but this isn’t as easy as you might initially assume. Because in order to actually do this, you require a specialised workstation known as the Fabrication Bench. The blueprints for this can only be unlocked by researching ‘Fabrication’ much later in the research tree.

And once you complete this research project, you’ll require the following materials for construction:

• 12 Components.
• 2x Advanced Components.
• 200x Steel.

Now you may notice that the list above includes a new resource called Advanced Components. This is a higher tier of the regular Components, and they can only be initially acquired either through trading or deconstructing Crashed Ship Parts.

Regardless of how you get the first two units for the Fabrication Bench, additional Components and Advanced Components can be built at the station going forward. They aren’t all that cheap to make, though.
