Story And Setting

The game features three distinct AI storytellers, each offering a unique experience in terms of difficulty, events, and pacing. The default storyteller, Cassandra Classic, provides a challenging and progressively escalating experience that focuses on presenting the player with a steady stream of events, gradually increasing in difficulty as the game progresses.

Phoebe Chillax on the other hand offers a more relaxed and slower-paced experience… or so it would seem at first. She provides longer periods of peace and recovery between major events, but when those major events come, make sure that you’re absolutely prepared because they will hit, hard.

As you manage their needs, allocate tasks, and confront unexpected events, intricate narratives unfold, complete with love, loss, betrayal, and triumph.

Speaking of hard-hitting events, the next storyteller is Randy Random, and as the name suggests, he is the wildcard of the trio. He offers a highly unpredictable experience, with events that range from minor inconveniences to cataclysmic disasters, all in the span of a few hours. Although, one thing is for certain with Randy; he will always provide a constant supply of popcorn-munching drama.

Each AI storyteller caters to different playstyles and preferences, offering a variety of challenges and pacing options. Whether you seek a balanced progression with Cassandra Classic, a more relaxed approach with Phoebe Chillax, or an adrenaline-fueled, unpredictable experience with Randy Random, the game provides.

Gameplay

The depth of gameplay here is truly astonishing. The game seamlessly weaves together a complex web of systems, including resource management, base-building, research, and combat. Balancing the needs of your colonists, ensuring a steady supply of food, managing power and temperature, and defending against external threats all become critical elements in your quest for survival. Each decision requires careful consideration, as even the smallest oversight can have profound consequences for your colony’s well-being.

A significant aspect of RimWorld revolves around constructing and managing your colony’s base. You’ll have the opportunity to design and expand your base to meet the needs of your colonists. This includes constructing various structures like bedrooms, dining areas, workshops, and even research and medical facilities. Efficient base layout, infrastructure planning, and resource allocation are crucial to ensuring the survival and well-being of your colonists.

Speaking of resource allocation, managing resources also plays a vital role in RimWorld. You’ll need to gather different resources like food, wood, metal, and textiles to sustain your colony. Balancing resource acquisition, storage, and consumption is essential for long-term survival. Hunting wildlife, farming crops, mining minerals, and trading with passing caravans or neighboring factions are a few ways to secure these valuable resources.

That being said, these resources are completely useless if you don’t have any colonists left to use them, so taking care of their needs is also important. These include food, rest, comfort, cleanliness, and recreation.

Balancing resource acquisition, storage, and consumption is essential for long-term survival.

As the player, you’ll need to ensure that their needs are met to prevent mood deterioration and potential breakdowns. Each colonist also possesses unique skills, passions, and traits that influence their proficiency in various activities, such as cooking, crafting, shooting, or medical treatment. Assigning tasks based on their skills and interests is crucial for efficient resource management and the overall success of your colony.

Once you have your resources secured and your colonists taken care of, advancing your colony’s technology through research will likely be your next step. You’ll need to prioritize and allocate research projects to unlock new structures, items, and technologies. Researching advanced technologies can enhance your colony’s capabilities, such as better defenses, improved medical treatments, or more efficient power sources. Choosing the right technologies to research can greatly impact your ability to handle challenges and progress in the game.

While you are researching a way to get off of this planet, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone here. Interacting with other factions and traders can play a major role in your overall progression. You can establish trade relationships, form alliances, or engage in diplomatic negotiations with neighboring factions. Trading resources, recruiting new colonists, or requesting assistance during critical times can significantly impact your colony’s progress. Building positive relations with factions can lead to beneficial alliances, while hostile actions may result in raids or retaliations.

The outcome of battles can have lasting consequences, such as injuries, capturing prisoners, or acquiring valuable resources from defeated enemies.

If for some reason you do end up on the wrong foot with another faction, you’ll have to make sure your colonists are capable of defending themselves. Nevertheless, the low-resolution sprites and environments may appear dated and repetitive, and detract from visual variety. The game is no Stardew Valley in terms of visual appeal, and I think it would have been able to draw an even bigger audience if it did have that appeal. With that being said, it is worth keeping in mind that RimWorld prioritizes gameplay depth and emergent storytelling over graphical fidelity, relying on players’ imagination to fill in the gaps.

One benefit of the simplistic art style, however, is that the game can be run on a toaster. There were also no noticeable bugs or crashes during our playthrough of the game.
