The series has sold over three million copies alone since mid-last year when compared to the old License Global report. Both reports further affirm that the WWE franchise currently dominates the fighting genre by retaining its status as the best-selling fighting game series in console history. It also stands as the best-performing mobile gaming brand, garnering over 153 million downloads spanning its triumphant legacy.
WWE is the No. 1 best-selling fighting video game franchise in console history, with over 98 million units sold. It is a top-performing mobile gaming brand with 153 million downloads across its gaming portfolio,” mentions the new report.
The history of the WWE entries spans a long way back before the 2K Games studio came into the picture. So, the report counts a slew of WWE games that are not under the 2K banner at all. THQ was renowned as the front face of the popular fighting franchise before 2K took over the series. It brewed a bundle of cult classics like WWF No Mercy for N64.
The WWE games under THQ sold a huge number of copies for its time. For instance, the highly popular WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 rolled over 6 million copies as of 2008. WWE Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain is still reminisced as a popular choice among many nostalgic fans, and some consider it the best entry in the franchise.
The era of arcade brawlers came to an end came in 2012 when 2K stepped in as the publisher. The WWE 2K titles in the franchise have seen many ups and downs since the first project under 2K, WWE 2K14, was released to staggering success.
Eventually, the series would crumble and collapse on itself over the years; the release of WWE 2K20 was a popular disaster that fans of the series still recall. The wrestlers would seemingly become one with the stadium and glitch into the surroundings often. Random glitches causing the body to mutate into various things in between casual game session was also not a rare occurrence in the title.
The latest entry, WWE 2K23, proved to be a giant improvement over the precursor, featuring better physics, gameplay, no major glitches, visuals, and more that feel like a hearty WWE venture. It debuted at the top of the UK retail sales charts in March this year. However, it still retains anomalies like lousy face models and the pesky lock-on. It came out on March 17, 2023, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC.
