Story Highlights
- Ex-Rockstar dev, Mike Yorker, explained that GTA 6 skipped PC at launch due to the hardware diversity.
- The studio has come a long way since GTA 5 with significantly more resources at its disposal.
- New technology may have improved the process but hardware configurations still pose a challenge.
According to a former Rockstar developer, the factor preventing GTA 6 from getting a PC release at launch is Rockstar’s “lack of resources” and the diversity of the platform’s ecosystem as shown in the video at 5:36. One of the first factors discussed by York goes over how studios focus on what sells, a fact that’s rather obvious considering video games have always been about making money.
Given the history of Sony‘s PlayStation brand, it’s been considered as the hardware that sells for the greater part of the industry’s history. Developers want to prioritize what sells to generate revenue and double down on optimization to ensure a seamless experience. With GTA 6, the scale appears to be on a hitherto unforeseen level lending some credence to the explanation.
If they had a huge team, they’d just have one team work on the PC, one team work on the Xbox, and the whole time they’d be trying to optimize all three versions… But it just doesn’t work that way. We don’t have the money, we don’t have the resources, we don’t have the manpower. So we just prioritize what’s best for the company’s money. So let’s put all our money into the PlayStation, then the Xbox, then the PC.”
However, while the company’s position may have changed for the better, PC hardware is as diverse as it ever was. Optimizing a game like GTA 6 for all the different hardware configurations out there would still be an overwhelming task due to the relationship between developing a billion-dollar game and testing it at that level on consoles. Nevertheless, it’s going to be a while till you’re able to hit the streets of present-day Vice City on PC.
On a side note, Rockstar has come a long way since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5. York explains how back in the day, the studio was mainly pushing the PlayStation 3 to its utmost limits, prioritizing one ecosystem over the other. A few years later, GTA 5 arrived on the eighth generation consoles in addition to PC with new features, improvements, and more.

It’s no secret that Rockstar attained astronomical levels of success with Grand Theft Auto 5, generating over $8.5 billion in worldwide revenue. With the studio’s massive accomplishments with GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and the parallel evolution of technology in general, Rockstar should be in a position where delivering a well-optimized experience on consoles and PCs simultaneously is possible.
On December 5, 2023, Grand Theft Auto 6 was revealed to the public. The ninety-second footage displayed the diverse facets of Vice City in stunning visuals, amassing over 100 million views and 8 million likes within the initial 24 hours. The upcoming installment in this renowned franchise is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025, with no current mention of a PC release.
