GTA 5 has long been rumored to arrive on the Nintendo Switch ever since its reign on other platforms. While the sprawling rumors have intensified over the years, the recent source code leak may have shut them down for good. As found by the Redditor u/RafaelSwi on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, the Nintendo Switch port for the game was likely never in development. However, Rockstar Games had allegedly once planned it.

Based on hardware speculations, it was discovered that Rockstar was developing for the NX (the console codename for Switch). The development of the port was supposedly halted once the devs discovered that the console would utilize an ARM-based architecture. The “NX64” codename has been included plenty of times in the leaked GTA 5 source code, but “Nintendo Switch” mentions are quite rare in comparison.
The analysis is also not based on outdated source code since the latest files found in the code come from the second half of 2021. It would have been impossible for GTA 5 to run on the Switch since the game engine was not supported by its architecture in the past. Nevertheless, the RAGE engine used by Rockstar was recently ported over the ARM 64 config with the release of Red Dead Redemption in August for Nintendo Switch.
The fans are wondering if we will finally get the awaited port in the future since the game engine is now supported. It is worth noting that another batch of rumors implies that a GTA 5 Nintendo port is indeed happening after interpreting the leaked source code in other ways. Although, they do not seem to have enough backing behind the claims. We suggest taking the leaks with a massive grain of salt until officially confirmed.

The GTA 5 source code leak has been an untimely hit against the massive conglomerate, causing the game’s code and Bully 2 files to spread across the far reaches of the net. The source code has now already been sold to a group belonging to a modding community for a mere $2000, which could potentially cause damages and also open a new realm for the mods.
GTA 5 first came out on September 17, 2013, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It eventually landed on PC in 2015 before arriving on last-gen and current-gen over the years, with significant improvements in each iteration. Rockstar Games has also launched the first trailer for the sequel, GTA 6, which is slated to arrive sometime in 2025 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. However, no PC release date has yet been affirmed.
