Story Highlights
- Cyberpunk 2077 came out in 2020 but launched to disastrous reviews because of its failed launch.
- The game has dramatically improved ever since and even received a new DLC called Phantom Liberty.
- The developer of the title affirms that Phantom Liberty has sold well in commercial terms.
Cyberpunk 2077 has probably pulled one of the biggest wildcards in history for how CD Projekt Red has handled the RPG’s redemption arc. Back when the title came out in fall 2020, it was labeled a flat-out disaster on multiple levels. Fast-forward to 2024 today, the game’s expansion has been deemed a commercial success by the developers themselves, with the results translating over to the base game as well, of course.
Reaching out to IGN, a CDPR representative has confirmed that the DLC has an attach rate of 23% (let me explain the business lingo in a bit), and comparing that with another of CD Projekt Red’s most successful ventures The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it’s revealed to us that the Hearts of Stone DLC for the latter boasted an attach rate of 22%. Similarly, the other expansion of the RPG Blood and Wine looked solid with a 24% attach rate, as explained by the joint CEO of CDPR Michael Nowakowski.
The term “attach rate” is defined as the ratio between copies sold of a secondary product and a primary product. Phantom Liberty’s attach rate of 23% means that this percentage amount of people who bought Cyberpunk 2077, which is the base game, also purchased the DLC. 23% isn’t bad at all, especially considering that CD Projekt Red’s other big hit also sold similar figures.
It also bears mentioning that Phantom Liberty was released after a substantial amount of time had already passed with the release of the base game Cyberpunk 2077. In the case of Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, the DLCs didn’t take half as much time, releasing shortly after 1 year. This certainly signals the acclaim of Cyberpunk 2077 that it has acquired over the course of its release.

On a side note, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has clocked a record 5 million units sold with the base game also doing well by rolling over 25 million units to date. It’s nothing but commendable how CDPR picked the RPG up from its miserable state soon after the release of the title, mapping out Update 2.0 and then going on to release a rip-roaring expansion too in the name of Phantom Liberty. The redemption arc’s execution has turned out clean, evidently.
Cyberpunk 2077 initially launched in December 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, earning a 3/5 rating in eXputer’s dedicated review. Phantom Liberty, on the other hand, came out on September 26, 2023, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as well, acting as the first and final DLC for CDPR’s ambitious RPG. We rated it significantly better with a 4.5/5.0 score, thanks to the massive improvements the expansion brought.
