Story Highlights
- Foamstars is a brand-new IP by Square Enix that’s scheduled for release in early 2024.
- The game was first announced back at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023.
- Official news for the title is coming later today, with fans expecting a release date soon.
Square Enix seems to be trying something new with its daring new IP in the name of Foamstars—a third-person game that it likes to refer to as a “party shooter” that utilizes foam instead of guns. Wonder how that’s going to play out. Anyhow, the official X (previous Twitter) handle of the title has posted an update, saying that more official news drops for Foamstars soon, with a release date reveal on the cards, possibly.

For those not in the know, Foamstars had its time in the spotlight during the PlayStation Showcase that aired live on multiple platforms back in May 2023. If you missed the event and its subsequent announcements, here’s a recap that’ll get you up to speed at a glance. The following reveal trailer for the ambitious shooter was dropped, containing both cinematic and gameplay elements. Didn’t really expect things to unfold that way during the first few seconds of the footage.
Square Enix held an open beta of Foamstars in September last year and allowed players from around the world to get a taste of the game’s two in-game multiplayer modes, including Smash the Star and Happy Bath Survival exclusively on the PlayStation 5, though the third-person shooter is headed for the PlayStation 4 just as well.

Following the reveal of Foamstars in May last year, Kosuke Okatani, the producer of the project in question, made a post on the offiical PlayStation Blog, detailing players and critics what to expect of the party-themed shooter when it finally makes landfall. The shooting mechanic has been expanded on, in specific, given how the title employs unorthodox equipment for its in-game battles.
Foam isn’t used for just attacking; shoot foam on the ground and it will build up, altering the terrain. A key feature of this title is that the uses of foam are creative and versatile. For instance, players can build up foam fortresses and shoot enemies from the top, surf on suds to traverse the battlefield, or even use foam to defend from enemy attacks,” reads the offiical Square Enix post on PlayStation Blog, explaining some of Foamstar’s mechanics.
The official Foamstars website mentions “early 2024” with respect to the game’s release window. Taking that into account, it’s likely that the title will release in February, right alongside the likes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League—another live service shooter by Rocksteady Studios.
