Skull & Bones has been in development for a long time now. Initially, an expansion for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, the game has been in the works for nine years. It has gone through many creative changes during this time before going through a complete directional reboot in 2020. So, the game has had a very troubled production. But, a recent update from Ubisoft’s latest earning call finally gives us some good news about the game.
In Thursday’s financial call, Ubisoft CEO Frederick Duguet gave us an update about the game’s new creative direction, saying it will be ‘Multiplayer-first.’ Talking about the game during the earning call, Duguet said;
It’s a very promising new IP focusing on multiplayer first, so very consistent with our strategy to bring multiplayer competition and co-op first in a big open world, with a great, attractive fantasy.
Therefore, Ubisoft finally having a single strategy for the game is excellent news for the players. Duguet also spoke about the long delay the game has gone through “That’s, of course, a longer development time that we’ve had on that game, but we’re delighted with the artistic direction and the progress of the game so far.”
Hence, Skull & Bones is finally progressing in the right direction and according to Ubisoft’s plans. It’s a significant update seeing that the game will finally be complete. However, it is different from the original premise of Skull & Bones that Ubisoft promised to deliver.
The game was marketed as a single-player pirate game with elements of multiplayer. But now, that is not where the game is going. Fans wanted a single-player pirate game, and the excitement for this game arose from that premise. As a result, many players might not buy the game with this change in direction. But that is my opinion about it and nothing else.
Skull & Bones isn’t the only new Ubisoft game coming out in the near future. The studio announced other new games at the earnings call as well. Ubisoft is releasing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and other “More exciting games.” So, players have more to be hyped about other than Skull & Bones.
It’s nice to hear something good about Skull & Bones finally. We don’t know if it will deliver a good game with this new creative direction, but we only hope Ubisoft gives us something good. According to the earnings call, there is no release date as of now, but it is coming out before April 2023. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
