Story Highlights
- A notable PlayStation exec predicts a shift from “visuals to immersive narratives” in gaming.
- Game NPCs could become more expressive towards each player, fostering realistic storytelling.
- He argues that video games could become a more customized experience for each player.
In a new strategy meeting, Sony presented its “Creative Entertainment Vision,” which looked at the company’s long-term plan for future technological advances in the coming decade. An interview was also published where the top PS executive Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, predicted how gaming would evolve in the next decade, claiming that devs will finally shift from focusing on graphics to immersive narratives.
The focus is going to shift from graphics or visuals to immersive narratives that resonate long after the controller is set down,” said Asad Qizilbash.
He reckons that advances in AI and other technologies will turn gaming into a deeply expressive medium. A focus on making NPCs more interactive with their surroundings and players will likely result in improved storytelling. However, PlayStation may also subsequently increase the use of AI in game development.
Technological advancements will enhance emotional depth in games by allowing characters to be much more emotive and expressive, fostering more evocative storytelling. That’s going to help a whole generation of creators be able to just create so much more emotion in the stories.”
Gaming Could Become A Customized Experience For Each Player
The PlayStation exec thinks that gaming will become deeply personalized for gamers. NPCs may react uniquely to certain actions you take instead of having a general reaction, making compelling narratives a possibility. What attracted me the most is that prominent AAA studios may finally stop chasing visuals and experiment with improving game narration and physics.
