Story Highlights
- Sony’s reported move away from new physical PlayStation media has triggered considerable opposition.
- A petition defending game discs has attracted hundreds of thousands of signatures.
- An all-digital future gives Sony total control of your library and prices on their stores.
Sony’s digital-first direction is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Despite substantial criticism from players and retailers, the company continues to position digital distribution as PlayStation’s future.
2 days ago, Sony released a PlayStation Access video entailing new games coming to PS5 this week whilst ignoring all of the comments under their posts. Similarly, their X account is flooded with community notes under their posts.
Most of the backlash is due to the fact that Sony can remove digital content from the library at any time. Additionally, no physical games also gives Sony the monopoly to control the prices on their store due to the user having no second option.
Players Are Not Ready To Abandon Physical Games

The backlash is more than a handful of angry social media posts. A petition opposing Sony’s reported decision to stop producing new physical game media approached 200,000 signatures at the time of Tom’s Hardware’s report.
That does not guarantee Sony will reverse course, but it certainly demonstrates that physical ownership still matters to a sizeable group of players.
Discs allow games to be resold, shared, collected, and purchased from competing retailers. Digital storefronts offer convenience, but they also tie purchases to an account and leave pricing largely under the platform holder’s control.
The Entertainment Retailers Association was particularly direct, arguing that removing discs eliminates choice rather than delivering progress.
That is the larger issue here. Digital games are not inherently bad, but making them the only practical option is another matter entirely.
Sony Has Been Moving In This Direction For Years
None of this arrived without warning. The modular disc drive offered with the PS5 Slim already made physical media feel increasingly optional, although I previously argued that the PS5 Slim helped settle the physical-versus-digital debate.
The PS5 Pro pushed the strategy further by launching without a built-in disc drive. Considering its premium positioning, that omission contributed to the argument that the PS5 Pro struggled to justify its existence.
Analysts have also warned that physical releases could be phased out by 2028. Sony’s current direction makes that prediction feel considerably less dramatic than it once did.
Digital Convenience Should Not Mean Digital-Only
Sony can promote digital games as much as it wants. Downloads are convenient, eliminate disc swapping, and make releases instantly accessible. For many players, that tradeoff is perfectly reasonable.
The problem begins when convenience turns into compulsion.
Players should be able to choose between physical and digital purchases based on price, ownership preferences, and collecting habits. The backlash shows that demand for discs has not disappeared—even if Sony would clearly prefer everyone to move on.
