Former Bethesda Developer Revealed What Should Be Changed In The Fallout 3 Remaster

A former Bethesda developer says the Fallout 3 remaster should overhaul gunplay using Fallout 4 lessons, though Bethesda has not confirmed the changes.

Story Highlights

  • Former Bethesda designer Bruce Nesmith believes Fallout 3’s gunplay needs substantial improvement.
  • He expects a potential remaster to reuse lessons and technology developed for Fallout 4.
  • Bethesda has not formally detailed the project, so his comments should not be treated as confirmation.

Fallout 3 remains one of Bethesda’s most influential RPGs, but its real-time shooting has not aged nearly as gracefully as its world or quests. Former Bethesda designer Bruce Nesmith agrees, and he believes improving that gunplay should be a priority if the long-rumored remaster eventually arrives.

Fallout 3’s Gunplay Is The Obvious Starting Point

Speaking about the potential remaster, Nesmith candidly admitted that Fallout 3’s gunplay is “not good.” As reported by FRVR, he expects players will probably see “a lot of that work” from Fallout 4 applied to an updated version of the 2008 RPG.

“It didn’t hold up to shooters at the time,” he explained, “a lot of work was done on that for Fallout 4.”

Fallout 3’s combat was heavily influenced by character statistics, weapon skills, and V.A.T.S. That design works perfectly well within an RPG, but the moment-to-moment aiming lacks the responsiveness expected from a modern first-person game.

Fallout 4 made shooting considerably more immediate without abandoning perks, weapon builds, or V.A.T.S. A remaster could therefore preserve Fallout 3’s progression systems while borrowing Fallout 4’s smoother combat foundation. That would be a far better approach than merely increasing the resolution and calling it a day.

A Remaster Should Preserve More Than It Replaces

Modernized shooting would be welcome, but Bethesda would need to avoid changing Fallout 3’s identity. Its bleak atmosphere, dialogue-driven quests, exploration, and role-playing choices matter far more than turning it into a conventional shooter.

Bethesda Has Not Confirmed These Changes

Nesmith’s comments reflect what he expects and what he believes should improve; they are not an official feature list. Until Bethesda formally reveals the Fallout 3 remaster, its combat changes, platforms, and release plans remain unknown.

Still, his assessment is difficult to dispute. If Fallout 3 returns, better gunplay is not just a nice bonus—it is the most obvious upgrade Bethesda could make.
