Only 7 PlayStation Games Have Topped 100,000 US Physical Sales This Year, says analyst

PlayStation physical sales are fading in the US, with only seven games topping 100,000 boxed copies in 2026 as digital purchases dominate the market.

Story Highlights

  • Circana analyst Mat Piscatella says only seven PlayStation releases have sold more than 100,000 physical copies in the US during 2026.
  • The figure highlights how thoroughly digital purchases now dominate the PlayStation software market.
  • It also complicates the popular “no disc, no buy” argument surrounding consoles and game releases.

Physical games still have a vocal audience, but the latest US sales data paints a considerably less encouraging picture. According to Circana executive director and analyst Mat Piscatella, only seven PlayStation games have surpassed 100,000 physical unit sales in the country this year.

PlayStation’s Physical Sales Look Increasingly Small

Piscatella shared the statistic while responding to a Kotaku post entailing hateful comments regarding no physical games under the new Wolverine trailer. Analyst Mat Piscatella shared on Bluseky:

The figure covers PlayStation software sold physically in the US during 2026. It does not mean physical games have disappeared, nor does it account for collectors purchasing imports or used copies. Still, seven games exceeding 100,000 units is hardly evidence of a thriving mass market.

The “No Disc, No Buy” Backlash Has A Numbers Problem

Physical PlayStation Games
By 2028 there will be no retail store shelves with physical games.

Online criticism intensified when Sony launched the PS5 Pro without an integrated disc drive. The drive is available separately, but that did little to address concerns about ownership, preservation, or long-term access. It was another reason some argued that the PS5 Pro struggled to justify its existence.

The problem is straightforward: publishers follow purchasing behavior, not comment sections. If physical supporters want boxed releases to survive, those editions need to generate enough sales to warrant manufacturing, distribution, and retail space.

That does not make the concerns surrounding digital ownership invalid. Games can be delisted, storefronts eventually close, and massive downloads are not convenient for everyone. Physical media remains valuable—just seemingly not valuable enough to most US PlayStation buyers.

Sony, meanwhile, remains committed to graphically ambitious, narrative-rich games, but how those titles reach players is clearly changing. Combined with complaints about the PS5’s first-party exclusive drought, this sales data raises a blunt question: how many players demanding discs are actually buying them?

For now, digital is not merely winning on PlayStation. It appears to be running away with the market.
