Capcom Has Released a Monster Hunter Wilds Demo A Year After Launch

Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue is free on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, featuring character creation, the opening hunt and transferable save.

Story Highlights

  • Capcom has released a free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
  • Players can experience the opening story, create a Hunter and Palico, and battle the Chatacabra.
  • Character and story progress from the demo can be transferred to the full game.

Capcom has finally released a free demo for Monster Hunter Wilds, well over a year after the action RPG originally arrived.

The publisher announced through the official Monster Hunter account that the new Prologue Demo is available across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is a surprisingly late trial for such a major release, but it gives undecided players a much better way to judge Wilds than another trailer ever could.

That is particularly useful on consoles, where Monster Hunter Wilds’ potential 30 FPS limitation was already attracting concern before launch.

What Is Included In The Monster Hunter Wilds Demo?

The Prologue Demo covers the opening section of Monster Hunter Wilds. Players can create their Hunter and Palico, begin the story, explore the early environments, and tackle the introductory hunt against the Chatacabra.

Specifically, it includes the prologue up to the beginning of Chapter 1-3 “To the Forest”, full access to character creation and all 14 weapon types.

Most importantly, save data carries over to the complete game. That means anyone who purchases Wilds afterward can continue without repeating the prologue or rebuilding their characters. Considering how much time some players spend in character creators, that feature alone removes a potentially annoying roadblock.

A Late Demo Still Makes Plenty Of Sense

Monster Hunter Wilds launched on February 28, 2025, making this Prologue Demo unusually late compared to the pre-release trials publishers commonly use to generate hype. However, its timing is not entirely baffling.

Wilds has received updates since release, and a permanent demo can attract players who ignored the launch window, remained concerned about performance, or were unwilling to purchase the game without trying its combat first. The Steam release also carries substantial PC requirements, so testing the demo before buying is the sensible move for anyone uncertain about their hardware.

Ultimately, releasing a demo this late is still better than never releasing one at all. Monster Hunter’s combat, progression, and deliberate weapon animations will not appeal to everyone, and a playable introduction is the fairest way to determine whether Wilds clicks with you.
