Sequels aren’t always the best thing and everyone who knows pop culture is aware of that. Most of the time they remove all of the elements which made the original great and ruin the series. Games are no exception to this rule and we see many subpar sequels every year.
But, sometimes a sequel comes along which exceeds all expectations and breaks the tradition. Half-Life 2 is one of those rare sequels that was way better than the original game. It came out way back in 2004 and got universal acclaim while sweeping every award show.
Since the release of Half-Life 2, we haven’t seen another sequel in the FPS series. Valve did release a prequel called Half-Life: Alyx for VR but that’s about it. Now, we may finally be getting a new feature for Half-Life 2 almost 18 years after release.
Valve has officially approved a new fan-made VR mod for Half-Life 2 and it will be coming to the game in 2022. It has been in development since 2017 and is the work of an expert VR mod team. The mod has gone through many delays since 2017 but now the launch is finally inching closer.
According to the official page for this Half-Life 2 VR mod, it is undergoing beta testing right now. A select few people are getting to try out this mod and give feedback to the third-party group making it. Youtuber Beardo Benjo recently got to try out this mod through a closed beta and you can see the results in his recent video.
The last we got an official update for this project was back in May. A YouTube video posted by a random account showed us where the Half-Life 2 mod stood in its life cycle. Many new things like tunnel view while driving, alternate grenade throwing method and new hand poses have been added to the mod.
We don’t have a certain release for the Half-Life 2 VR mod as of yet. Only a vague hint is given on the official website of this mod saying that it will most probably release by the end of this year. Wormslayer, the Head of the development team behind the VR mod, also made an appearance on the Modcast VR podcast recently and said that the development team hopes to release the mod in November.
Conveniently, Half-Life 2 has its 18th birthday in the month, so this move makes a lot of sense. He also said that the mod will release in early access and will be a free download for all players. It will have an official Steam storefront product page, so you can play the game without any hassle.
