Story Highlights
- There have been multiple surprising announcements and thrilling wins at Evo 2024.
- Punk finally became the Street Fighter champion after a 7-year struggle.
- Arslan Ash managed to retain his crown despite struggling with Tekken 8 initially.
As a die-hard fan of the fighting games genre, I had huge expectations from Evo 2024 both in terms of the competition and the announcements. Thankfully, the event delivered in both of those departments and ended up being a magical moment for the entire fighting game community to witness. It was filled with unexpected announcements and staggering back-to-back grand finals.
Punk’s Emotional Win In Street Fighter 6
Every fighting games category outperformed at Evo 2024 but Street Fighter 6 was at the top of the ladder. It is already known that SF6 is doing the strongest out of all the fighting games currently and has the highest number of entrants at Evo. With that being said, what stole the show in the tournament of this game was Punk taking the crown.
It was not only an emotional win for the fans but also for the community, especially if you’ve been following Street Fighter since 2017. Punk has always secured either second place or made it to the top 8 but never won an Evo before. However, that changes in 2024, and now Punk gets to finish his storyline by becoming the strongest Street Fighter 6 player.

This was a huge 7-year journey with a lot of failures and setbacks but Punk never faltered, instead, he came back stronger. This is exactly why his win resonated so much with the SF community and it became a historic moment that will always be remembered in Evo history.
Aside from Punk’s grand finale, there was another huge announcement. Another video of Terry Bogard was also shown which showcased his character model in Capcom’s RE engine. This was a really amazing moment, especially for the community, because, for the first time ever, we get to see a guest character in a mainline SF game.
Arslan Ash’s Remains An Undefeated Champion
With the release of Tekken 8, everything changed in the community because the game was the complete opposite of Tekken 7. Instead of the defensive game that the pros were familiar with in Tekken 7, they had to completely change their styles for the more offensive gameplay system of Tekken.
This initially led to a lot of criticism, especially from the pro players. Arslan Ash had dominated the Evo of Tekken 7 for four consecutive times but even he was having a hard time and was even not winning a lot of the smaller tournaments.

Many people doubted Arslan at Evo 2024 because he seemed to be struggling with Tekken 8 at first. However, he proved everybody wrong in the grand finals and took the first-ever champion title for Tekken 8. This is not just it, he even set the record for winning Evo five consecutive times which is extremely huge.
Surprising Announcements For Guilty Gear Strive
Guilty Gear Strive had a few surprises up its sleeve as well. Finally, after a long wait, a new season pass has been announced which includes a guest character, a first for this game. And that guest character is a really unique choice, it’s Lucy from the Cyberpunk Edgerunners Show. As a fan of both of these franchises, I couldn’t be more happy for the future of Guilty Gear Strive.
In addition to this amazing announcement, we witnessed an amazing comeback by Nitro. Nitro actually lost and entered the loser’s bracket on the final day of the tournament but managed to take himself into the grand finals. He even reset the bracket and then beat Tatuma to take the crown in an epic finale. There are many things that make Evo 2024 special and extraordinary wins and surprising announcements are just the tip of the iceberg.
