Is Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Worth Buying At 55% Off? That’s A Firm Yes

Respawn's 2023 smash hit is nothing to sleep on.

Story Highlights

  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an action-adventure RPG by Respawn Entertainment, currently on sale.
  • The title’s discounted pricing on the PlayStation Store right now has many questioning its quality.
  • Jedi: Survivor is top-tier in many ways, and is very well worth the money it’s coming at right now.

To give you a bit of background before I get started on the claim the title of this story has made, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the 2019-released action-adventure RPG by Respawn Entertainment, which has become well-known over time for spearheading the likes of Titanfall and Apex Legends.

Jedi: Survivor going on sale means its new, although ephemeral, pricing is going to attract a swath of new players who haven’t tried the game nor its predecessor yet. If you find yourself in a similar boat, here’s why I think you should give the RPG a go, especially if you’re a fan of open-world games with a rather enhanced emphasis on challenging difficulty.

What I Love About Jedi: Survivor

Here’s a quick rundown of why you might want to stretch your wallet a little and let those funds fly out for this grand Star Wars adventure.

The Visuals

The sequel to Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor is an equally good-looking game, with enhanced visuals that boast more clarity across the board. But graphical fidelity alone does not take the cake here, what truly propels the game upward and onward is the attention to detail that Respawn has paid with the title’s environment, pumping it full of particulars for the curious eye.

For a Star Wars game, this is as gorgeous as it gets.

Jedi Survivor has some of the best texture work/G.I. this generation, imo. Looks fantastic. (Captured on PS5’s Quality mode)

The Story

While sometimes predictable and happening to disgruntle some, Jedi: Survivor follows a fairly entertaining plot that concludes quite nicely as well. I won’t go into the details of the matter here — primarily because it’s all spoiler territory — but I will tell you what you need to know. The storyline of the RPG takes risks, is often questionable, but has its moments nonetheless, and is simply something you won’t end up feeling dissatisfied with.

I don’t get the hate for Jedi Survivor’s story.

The Combat

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order did plenty of good with its combat, but Jedi: Survivor does everything better with its elevated combat and subsequent abilities. In fact, some go on to claim that the game sports the best gameplay they’ve ever experienced. While I won’t put it up there right at the very top, it probably comes close, a little too close for that matter.

Jedi Survivor combat has “ruined” me for almost any other game…

Oh, and I almost forgot about Jedi: Survivor’s playable difficulty, which earns it the title of being referred to as Soulslike—the hellish parent subgenre that FromSoftware innovated decades ago. But alas! There’s flexibility instilled on this front as well, and it comes in the form of difficulty options. Feel free to crank up or turn the difficulty level down a notch and set it to whatever makes you more comfortable.

Here’s What Might Put You Off

As with everything in life, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows to report on this front. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor takes a considerable nosedive in some aspects. Better read up on them to make a well-informed purchasing decision.

PC Optimization Is Lackluster, Though There Are Workarounds

There’s not a universe out there where I’d recommend against purchasing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, but it’s this factor and this factor alone that makes me want to spell caution for potential buyers. As unfortunate as it is, the title still suffers from performance issues on PC, and according to recent reviews on Steam, things haven’t gotten completely better either.

Back when the title came out, its Steam listing was flagged with a “Mostly Negative” review rating, which generally improved over time, and now rests in the “Mixed” department. You will have to put up with inconsistent frame rates on the PC version of Jedi: Survivor here and there, but especially the Koboh region has to be watched out for specifically.

Even with a 4090 and Core i9-13900hx and 32 GB of RAM, I can’t brute force this game to run without chugging at 1080p 60 FPS. That’s right, 1080p, not 4K, not 1440p … 1080P,” says one concerned user on Steam in a review.

Arguably Bad Map Implementation

Now this is one area where Star Wars Jedi: Survivor could really use some work, but sadly, we’re too far out for Respawn to make any major QoL changes to the title. The in-game map is considered downright “awful” by the vast majority of the game’s player base, and I wouldn’t disagree with those claims all the way.

The user interface of the element comes across as confusing, and sometimes, there are technical issues at play that prevent the player from really making sense of their whereabouts.

Takeaway – One Charmer Of A Soulslike With Much To Offer

The 55% discount on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at the moment makes it a great buy, that’s what my verdict is. Stunning visuals, great gameplay, and the added touch of Soulslike difficulty have me ensnared by the RPG, as they have so many others. Just so you know, Steam hasn’t listed the title for discounted pricing at the moment; it’s Xbox and PlayStation where you can enjoy the price cut right now.

So, to top it off, you’ve probably seen to it by now that there’s not a lot of downsides that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has to offer, save for the PC performance part, because that is kind of a big deal to tackle at present. However, if you’re on console and are deciding whether to pull the trigger, the answer should be crystal by now.
