Story Highlights
- Tekken 8’s first season pass is just filled with Tekken 7 characters, two of which were in the base roster.
- There has been no confirmation of any guest appearances which has heavily impacted the popularity.
- The addition of microtransactions and Tekken Shop with a subpar first season was not the right move.
Tekken 8 is not heading in the right direction with how the developers have been handling the season pass as well as the DLC characters. All of the characters that have been revealed so far have been reskins of the previous game with a partially new moveset and some of these characters were also present in the base roster of Tekken 7. On top of that, there are a lot of microtransactions in Tekken 8 which were absent in its predecessor.
Bringing Back Tekken 7 Characters As DLC
You would think that the base roster of Tekken 7 and some part of its DLC would be present in Tekken 8 at launch. Well, that did not end up being the case as even Eddy Gordo, a legacy character who was never sold as DLC, was not even present in the base roster of Tekken 8. He was marketed as the first DLC character for this game and that came as a huge disappointment for the community.
Tekken 8 DLC – why are we fine with this?

The second DLC character was Lidia and even this is another character that was already present in Tekken 7. However, she was part of the DLC characters in that game as well, which is why the community was more forgiving towards this decision. But when you look at this situation from an unbiased perspective, you’ll see that paying for the DLC will unlock those characters that were already present in Tekken 7.
Heihachi Mishima’s Return Does Not Even Make Sense
Heihachi Mishima has died multiple times in the main storyline of the Tekken franchise but he always managed to return and was almost always part of the base roster. However, his death in Tekken 7 was confirmed to be the end for this character by the creator of the game. Now, the developers are bringing back Heihachi in Tekken 8 as the third DLC character which makes no sense narratively.

In addition to his nonsensical addition to Tekken 8, another thing that the community has is him being part of the DLC instead of the base roster like it has always been. A new character known as Reina was added to Tekken 8 at launch and she was effectively a replacement character for Heihachi since he had died in Tekken 7. With a replacement already present, bringing back a dead character as DLC is not the right direction for this game.
Guest Characters Need To Make An Appearance
The thing that made Tekken 7 extremely popular was the addition of guest characters in its DLC expansions. Imagine playing as Negan from The Walking Dead or Noctis from Final Fantasy 15 in your favorite fighting game. There were multiple guest characters from various franchises that made their way into Tekken 7. This is something that Tekken 8 currently lacks.

Instead of adding guest characters or even completely original fighters, the developers are just reusing characters from Tekken 7 and turning them into DLC for Tekken 8. At this point, the only thing that can save this game’s popularity in the long run is the addition of guest appearances, and I’m really hoping that season 2 will include them.
Microtransactions Are All Over The Place In Tekken 8
The addition of microtransactions to Tekken 8 was not something that the community was looking forward to especially when the DLC so far has not been worth it either. There’s a new battle pass in the game that you can purchase and grind for to obtain almost useless rewards. Then there’s the new Tekken Shop where the players can purchase cosmetic items for their characters and avatars.
To top it all off, some of the legacy outfits for various characters are locked behind the Tekken Shop and you can only unlock them using real-world money. This is not the Tekken that I remember as in Tekken 7, all I had to do in order to unlock more costumes and cosmetic items was to play the game.
This was not only fun but it was also one of the main reasons why I always liked Tekken more due to its lack of microtransactions. However, things are changing for the worse in Tekken 8 and the situation that the game is currently in, is not looking good for its future.
