Baldur’s Gate 3: All The Best Dark Urge Races
Out of the 11 races in Baldur’s Gate 3, here is the summary of the best races that I find best suited for a Dark Urge playthrough:
RANK | Race | Weapon Proficiency |
---|---|---|
1 | Drow | Rapier, Shortsword, And Hand Crossbow |
2 | Drow Half-Elf | Spears, Pikes, Halberds, and Glaives. |
3 | Tiefling | NA |
4 | Githyanki | Shortswords, Longswords, and Greatswords. |
5 | Dragonborn | NA |
Drow
- Why I chose this: Plenty of evil dialogue suitable for the Dark Urge and its excellent features.
Drow is a naturally evil race, especially the Lolth-sworn Drow. They find pleasure in killing and causing other harm. Throughout the game, they are scorned by other NPCs who are inclined towards good. However, a few villain NPCs, like the goblins, are respectful toward Drows.
Choosing a villainous race for your Dark Urge playthrough in Baldur’s Gate 3 is fitting. You get a lot of evil dialogue befitting a dialogue. Furthermore, you can give in to the urge and commit more killings that Drows are so fond of.
Race Features
- Proficient with Rapier, Shortsword, And Hand Crossbow
- Dark vision up to 24m.
- Fey Ancestry.
- Excellent Dark Vision.
- Evil Dialogues suitable for Dark Urge.
- No proficiency with Armour.
Drow Half-Elf
- Why I chose this: Similar to Drow and they have an interesting narrative where they are barely trusted.
Half-elfs lack a community and place of their own. However, they are ambitious, and during the Dark Urge playthrough, you can guide those ambitions towards the path of evil. I highly recommend picking the Drow Half-Elf subrace since, as mentioned before, the Drow race is inclined towards evil.
Drow Half-Elfs are shown not to be trustworthy and are struggling to find their place. They get interesting dialogue choices throughout the gameplay, especially when conversing with villains.
Race Features
- Proficient with Spears, Pikes, Halberds, and Glaives.
- Armour proficient with Light Armour and Shields.
- Dark vision up to 12m.
- Fey Ancestry.
- Excellent proficiency with a few melee weapons.
- Decent Dark Vision.
- Proficient with Light Armour and Shield.
- Proficiency limited to only Light Armour.
- Less Dark Vision than Drow.
Tiefling
- Why I chose this: Evil Tiefling provides an interesting narrative, and the race features are handy.
I think Tiefling is a very interesting choice for the Dark Urge playthrough, whether you choose to give in to the urge or control it. Tieflings are met with continuous disrespect and racism and are overall an oppressed race in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Since Tieflings are met with so much suspicion, you can make it come through by being bad and going on a killing spree. However, if you want to be a good Tiefling, like the ones shown in Emerald Grove, you can choose to control the urge and not kill anyone.
Race Features
- Dark Vision up to 12m.
- Hellish Resistance.
- Decent Dark Vision.
- Low damage received fire.
- Lack of proficiency with weapons and armour.
Githyanki
- Why I chose this: They get a lot of brutal dialogue in the game and don’t hesitate in killing others.
The Githyankis are rude and mean-spirited in nature. They are shown not to hesitate from killing during Baldur’s Gate 3 story, making it an excellent race to choose for your Dark Urge playthrough. Whether you decide to give in to the urge or control it, your experience will be worthwhile.
Githyanki are ruthless and seek to destroy the Mind Flayers after being enslaved by them. They want nothing with the tadpole inside their heads. However, they certainly won’t mind killing anyone whom they deem a threat. Furthermore, Githyanki’s psionic abilities are helpful in combat.
Race Features
- Light and Medium Armour proficiency.
- Proficient with Shortswords, Longswords, and Greatswords.
- Good armour proficiency.
- Good melee weapon proficiency.
- No Dark Vision.
- Not proficient with Heavy Armour.
Dragonborn
- Why I chose this: The Race is close to canonical as it was featured by the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3.
The Dark Urge is originally suggested to be played as Dragonborn. Furthermore, a white dragonborn known for his frosty abilities is suggested. You can customize your Dragonborn to a different race, but if you are moving on the path of evil, the White Dragonborn makes some terrifying ice-cold facial expressions.
The Dragonborn is a proud race that does not back away from anything; if they are challenged, they will be eager to go through with it. For such an honorable race to be a victim of the Dark Urge is ironic and provides an interesting narrative.
Race Features
- Draconic ancestry.
- Draconic Mastery grants a spell.
- No Dark Vision.
- Not proficient with Heavy Armour.
- Lack of weapon proficiency.
My Thoughts On The Best Races For Dark Urge
I think your best bet for the Dark Urge playthrough is a Drow.
I get enough evil dialogues in my playthrough as a Drow, and I think it’s a perfect fit if you use it with the Dark Urge origin character. The Drow is known for murdering people, and you can do it as much as you’d like.
Furthermore, I think Tiefling and Githyanki are interesting choices for a Dark Urge route as well.
