Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Early Game Team Comps

Try out these best team compositions for easy victory in combat.

The tactical turn-based combat of Baldur’s Gate 3 is something I found challenging even during the early game and picking the right team comps is the key to victory. Making a suitable team combination may seem daunting, considering the intricate combat mechanics of the game, especially when you are just starting.

  • Why Trust Us: Ibrahim has spent over 20+ hours in Baldur’s Gate 3, making his guide to the best early-game team comps in the game highly trustworthy.
Key Takeaways

  • It is essential to compose the right team with the available characters that balance both attack and support
  • Gale is an essential character in Baldur’s Gate 3 that you can add to various teams due to his excellent spell-casting abilities.
  • My favorite team composition included Gale, Shadowheart, Astarion, and Druid(player) as members.

1. Gale/Shadowheart/Astarion/Druid(Player)

The spellcasting mechanics of Baldur’s Gate 3 are very versatile, with various options. However, you will also need a decent support character added to your team to increase the damage-dealing capabilities further. Furthermore, adding a melee sub-DPS like Astarion is also recommended.

Gale

Gale will play the role of the main damage dealer for the team; you can give some handy early-game spells like Magic Missile that can hit multiple opponents in one turn. You can teach him some long-ranged spells like Thunderwave and Witch Bolt. Short-ranged spell-like burning hands is great during the start.

Other than combat, Gale can Speak with the Dead if you acquire the spell. Furthermore, a few of his other handy spells that can create water can be useful in exploration, especially in fiery areas. You can use Enhance Leap with Gale to jump off to distant areas.

Shadowheart

Shadowheart has excellent support and healing abilities, making her a strong early-game member in any team comp in Baldur’s Gate 3. Shadowheart’s healing word can heal characters. Moreover, she can also shield characters; Shadowheart can also use a few spells to inflict magic damage.

Astarion

While Astarion can cast spells, his main strength lies in his Rogue skills, so I suggest you utilize his melee and ranged physical attacks. Furthermore, find as many opportunities as possible to hide or trigger conditions for powerful sneak attacks.

You don’t really need Astarion to use his Spell casting abilities unless you are in a bind. I think Gale is enough for spell damage, but there is no harm in inflicting spell damage if you have spell slots available.

Druid (Player)

If you are using a Druid class as a player, you can use both magical attacks while acting as a support character for Gale. The Druid class gameplay is interesting as you can take the shape of various beasts such as wolves, cats, spiders, and more. These forms can play DPS or supportive roles.

Druid is an excellent spell-casting class that can heal, support, and attack. It is recommended to have Cure Wounds as a healing spell. Additionally, it is also suggested that you use the Moonbeam spell, which can be highly damaging when you need it.

  • Strong spell casting capabilities.
  • Decent support from Shadowheart and Druid.
  • You may run out of spell slots quickly.
  • lack of melee damage.

2. Sorcerer (Player)/Lae’zel/Shadowheart/Gale

Best Spell Casting Team Composition

Having two of the main spellcasting classes can destroy your enemies without running out of spell shots anytime soon. That’s why I suggested adding both Wizard and Sorcerer characters in the recommended early game party. Furthermore, Lae’zel can inflict great melee damage

Sorcerer (Player)

If you pick the Sorcerer class for your customizable avatar, you can use it as an excellent main damage dealer for your team. Sorcerers can create extra spell slots using sorcery points, allowing you to cast more spells. Sorcerers have Metamagic abilities that can improve the capabilities of spells.

Sorcerers are adept at magic, so you can cast a variety of long and short-ranged sorcerer spells. I recommend the Sorcerer class as a main DPS due to its excellent potential. The Sorcerer and the Wizard Gale, together in a team composition, will wreak havoc on enemies.

Lae’zel

Lae’zel is an excellent versatile Fighter. While she can cast spells, her capabilities in melee combat are top-notch. With the feat, Great Weapon Master, she can inflict bonus damage. She can also lacerate enemies, making them bleed.

Her Githyanki capabilities are helpful in exploration. She can jump thrice as high as a normal jump, allowing her to access areas that are hard to reach. With her mage hand, she can use a spectral hand to manipulate objects around her, aiding the rest of the team.

Shadowheart

Since we already have enough spell casters in the team, I suggest you use Shadowheart only as a support member in your party. She has enough healing and support capabilities for your team. It’s also recommended to use her for the shield in your team, which will prevent your character from dying early during combat.

Gale

Like the Sorcerer, Gale can cast multiple magic spells as a Wizard. He can use Arcane Recovery to gain more spell shots. Since Shadowheart may not be enough for support, I suggest you use Gale’s Mage Armour to increase your allies’ defensive capabilities

  • Strong magical attacks
  • Lae’zel can inflict good melee damage.
  • Wizard and Sorcerer may run out of spell slots.
  • Lacking support.

3. Karlach/Bard(Player)/Astarion/Gale

Best Balanced Team Composition

If you want a balanced early game team comp in Baldur’s Gate 3 with a little bit of everything, I think you should try it out. You will get great melee damage with Karlach and Astarion while the Bard plays the role of support; the spell casting is not out of the fray either, with Gale in your team.

Karlach

Karlach is a ruthless barbarian destroying everything in the way she is on fire. Her rage skills can greatly increase her damage-dealing potential. Furthermore, she can crush her enemies with her overwhelming strength during her ranged and melee attacks

Bard (Player)

I personally find Bard to be one of the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Bard can attack, support, heal, and debuff enemies effectively. You cannot go wrong by adding the Jack of all Trades to your team. However, I suggest you focus on the Bard’s support capabilities in the team composition as you are dealing enough damage by other party members.

Astarion

Astarion is a Rogue with excellent sneak attack potential. He can be a secondary damage dealer for the team. He can also give you a good head start, as his turn usually comes first. His role is subtle but defining, and he can be a key to leading you to victories.

Gale

Gale is one of the most powerful characters that you can add to your team in Baldur’s Gate 3. His excellent spell-casting skills are why I have included him in all three teams I suggested. Like his role in the previous teams, I suggested you use Gale as a magic damage dealer, contrary to Karlach, who will focus more on physical attacks.

  • Excellent support from Bard.
  • Good melee damage.
  • Balance between magic and physical damage.
  • Bard will run out of spell slots soon.

My Thoughts On Early Game Team Composition

I prefer the first team comp that I proposed, which included Gale, Shadowheart, Astarion, and Druid. It’s a versatile team good at exploration, spells, melee damage, and support. However, if you prefer to try out my other suggestions in the guide, you will be able to wreak havoc on the battlefield.
