Baraka Might Have Just Been Confirmed For Mortal Kombat 1

South African BT Games has potentially given it away.

Story Highlights

  • Mortal Kombat 1, the soon-to-arrive latest iteration in the Mortal Kombat franchise, is a reboot of the first game with a heavy emphasis on going back to basics.
  • The game saw its official reveal in recent times, introducing a bevy of classic fighters that will seemingly make their return in the reboot.
  • Apart from the characters that were shown to be a part of Mortal Kombat 1, an iconic yet horrifying fighter, Baraka, has not appeared as of yet.
  • However, a recent listing on a South African video game retailer called BT Games has seen the arrival of Mortal Kombat 1 Collectors Edition.
  • One of the items included in this novel variant of the game is a wearable balaclava, the design of which resembles that of Baraka’s oral section.
  • There’s no official confirmation of this as of yet, so do take the information with a pinch of salt going forward.

Little would’ve thought of it before, but a Mortal Kombat reboot that takes a more back-to-basics approach is soon coming, and judging from the recently posted reveal trailer, it’s packing quite the punch. According to a new scoop of information, it appears that a classic Mortal Kombat character will be marking his return in the forthcoming title, and it’s rumored to be none other than Baraka—the claw-donning handyman of Shao Kahn.

This anticipation comes from a major South African video game retailer called BT Games. The popular storefront has uploaded Mortal Kombat 1 Collectors Edition as a purchasable item for 4,899 rands, which converts to approximately $250. As part of the pre-order bonus, buyers will be receiving an exclusive balaclava in addition to the game’s copy and other goodies. The balaclava’s design resembles the appearance of Baraka from Mortal Kombat.

As per the series’ fandom, Baraka is a crossbreed of demons from the Netherealm and Outworld residents, leading him to acquire a demonic appearance by face. The balaclava is reminiscent of Baraka’s design and thus, seemingly indicates that the character will be a part of Mortal Kombat 1. Besides, him being in the title is pretty much confirmed, considering how the forthcoming fighter is set in a retrograde universe.

On a side note, some fans are of the opinion that the balaclava could be simply for Mileena as well, who is another prominent character in the Mortal Kombat series, known for her Baraka-like face design. According to the lore, Mileena is half-Tarkatan, which is the same species of people as Baraka, characterize by similar facial features. In other news, the reveal of Mortal Kombat 1 has taken fans by surprise, as almost everyone was hoping for a title that would be in direct continuation of the last title in the franchise—Mortal Kombat 11. Apparently, the reboot rotates around a different plotline in the game’s universe, with Fire God Liu Kang at the helm of it all, alongside revisited characters, more gut-wrenching fatalities, and an entirely novel environment setting.

In addition, the last couple of weeks have been pretty substantial for Mortal Kombat fans, with rumors and leaks sprouting left and right. At the start of May, a noteworthy industry insider claimed that Peacemaker and Homelander both would be coming to the next Mortal Kombat. Following that up was another rumor that talked about Conan the Barbarian being a part of the character roster as well

Then, a little over two days ago, Mortal Kombat 1’s Amazon Italy listing apparently surfaced ahead of time, leaking a bunch of a swath of both mainline and Kameo characters that would comprise the upcoming fighter. Peacemaker, Homelander, and quite surprisingly, Omni-Man are all in the next Mortal Kombat according to the product listing, but we’ve yet to verify the authenticity of that claim.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be coming out on September 19, 2023, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, while effectively skipping last-gen consoles.
