CD Projekt Red Doesn’t See A Place For Microtransactions In Single-Player Games

Multiplayer games are an exception, however.

Story Highlights

  • CD Projekt Red execs do not see a place for microtransactions in single-player games.
  • However, the CFO of CDPR mentions the possibility of them in the studio’s multiplayer titles.
  • The Cyberpunk 2077 maker is currently brewing multiple titles, including the next Witcher entry.

During an investor chat with the Polish financial site Stockwatch, CD Projekt Red CFO Piotr Nielubowicz claimed that the studio does not see a place for microtransactions in single-player games. The tidbit was shared in response to whether the upcoming games would see its addition in feature releases. The multiplayer titles are another story, however. The choice to add microtransactions will be considered for multiplayer games.

We don’t see a place for microtransactions in the case of single-player games, but we do not rule out that we will use this solution in the future in the case of multiplayer projects,” says the CFO.

We have seen the studio live up to the discussed ideals in its previous AAA single-player titles. So, a change in the player-friendly strategy is out of the picture. Additionally, the CFO said that physical releases for future releases are currently undecided—whether they come out or not entirely depends on the market at the time. Similarly, the price of AAA games could be adjusted if the market demands it.

CD Projekt Red Appears To Have A Bright Future Ahead

The CFO has confirmed Project Sirius—the Witcher spin-off entry by CDPR—will be AAA in scale. It is targeting a broader audience than The Witcher 3 and will feature multiplayer. So, we can expect microtransactions to be present in it. And if you are out of the loop, the studio has its hands full with other AAA projects currently in the brewer. They include The Witcher Remake, the next mainline Witcher release, and the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
