Fallout: New Vegas Director Happy To Make Another Fallout Game, But There’s A Catch

New Vegas, helmed by Josh Sawyer, is considered the best in the franchise.

Story Highlights

  • Josh Sawyer is the director of Fallout: New Vegas, the 2010-released mega-hit RPG by Bethesda Softworks.
  • In a recent Q&A session on his YouTube channel, Sawyer says he’s down to make another Fallout game.
  • The catch, however, is Sawyer is not too constrained by the IP holder and is left free in terms of development.

Bethesda’s high-flying flagship franchise, Fallout, peaked with the arrival of the spin-off Fallout: New Vegas in 2010, a first-person shooting RPG with an open-world, post-apocalyptic setting. In a recent Q&A session with his fans, game director Josh Sawyer was inquired whether he would be willing to return to spearhead another Fallout game if Microsoft or Bethesda asked him to. His response? “Uhhhhh, sure.”

Not too fast, though. Sawyer furthers the answer by laying out some of the ground principles he would want to be respected before he could agree to such a prospect.

I think that with any IP, especially one I’ve worked with before, the question is: ‘What do I want to do this time that I wasn’t able to do last time?’ And if those constraints are just really constraining, then it’s not very appealing, because who wants to work on something where the one thing they want to explore is not possible to explore?”

Josh says that this is really the case with any video game IP out there, especially as the project lead. A clear picture of what’s allowed to be done and what’s barred from venturing into is a good way to guarantee practical results and avoid potential conflicts right from the get-go.

As Per Sawyer, The Fallout IP Has A Lot Left Unexplored Still

After 4 major installments and multiple spin-offs, the Fallout IP is brimming with potential yet.

I love the Fallout IP. I think there are still a ton of stories that can be told in there, and questions that can be asked about ‘society.'”

For those not in the know, the Fallout RPG series birthed a TV series in its name, starring Ella Purnell. It’s remained a successful TV adaptationeven got green-lit for a second season — and sparked newfound interest in Fallout 4 for players across the world, making it the most-downloaded PS4 title earlier this year in May

As for the future of the franchise, Fallout 5 is in the works, but it’s pretty far out as of now. Bethesda director Todd Howard confirmed to IGN in an interview, saying “Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that.”
