In a new interview with Famitsu, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi stated that he has completely written the plot for his upcoming game. The developer revealed this info in the publication’s year-end creator interviews, confirming that he is now working on the overall scenario of the title and trying to figure out what makes it fun. Hence, Sakaguchi’s mysterious new game is going to begin production in 2024.
I’m starting work on a new title. I’m currently writing the scenario, having gone through the scenario plot. At this stage, it’s important to condense and infuse what makes it fun. I will do my best.”
The Lost Odyssey developer first mentioned this project in Famitsu’s 2022 year-end creator interviews, saying that he was planning to work on a dark fantasy game, with no other specifics revealed. Sakaguchi’s next update about this project only came about two months ago when he posted on X about going to the Ise Jingu Shrine in Japan to give thanks for the “new project.”
Hence, it feels like Hironobu Sakaguchi has finally got some liftoff in the past few months and we could get some info very soon. This secret IP is the producer’s first project since Fantasian, the Apple Arcade RPG he thought would be his last ever game.
In addition to creating one of the greatest franchises of all time in the form of Final Fantasy, Sakaguchi directed the first five games in the series in addition to producing the sixth and seventh entries through his original story and concepts. He also developed other titles like Blue Dragon and Terra Battle for Square Enix besides acting as an executive producer for Kingdom Hearts (which was influenced by his work), Parasite Eve 2, and Chrono Cross.

Hironobu Sakaguchi created his studio, Mistwalker, in 2004, and has since developed several successful new IPs. Blue Dragon, a 2006 Xbox 360 RPG, was both a commercial and critical success while Lost Odyssey also garnered high acclaim while selling so well that Microsoft considered turning it into a franchise. The video game designer has an impressive track record, to say the least, and it’ll be interesting to see what his new game turns out like.
