Gwent: The Witcher Card Game Will Get No New Content After 2023

The developers will pass on the torch to the community through the "Gwentfinity" tool.

When we talk about legendary RPG franchises, The Witcher is one name that always comes up. Since the release of the 3rd game, the series has become one of the most popular titles in the world, even getting a Netflix series. But the franchise’s flagship card game, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, will not get any new content after 2023.

CD Projekt Red will not release any new cards in the game after this year ends. But, the card game is not going to be forsaken completely, as fans will take over the reins through a new tool.

Major Takeaways:

  • Gwent: The Witcher Card Game will not get any new content after 2023.
  • 70 more cards and a final Esports season will be part of the game’s final content year.
  • A new tool called Gwentfinity will hand the reins of the card game over to fans.

In their 2023 roadmap video for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, the developers announced its future. The game will get more content in 2023, which includes dozens of new cards. However, there will be nothing new from the developers after the year ends.

According to the video, there will be 3 more card drops in 2023. More than 70 new cards will come into Gwent: The Witcher Card Game through these drops. It already has more than 800 playable cards in its deck so this will add to a huge total.

Developers also said in the stream that they were happy with the pool size the game has. They never implemented rotation in Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and they don’t intend to now. Even though there will be no addition of new cards, the devs are working on a tool to handle card balance.

Gwentfinity is the name of this tool and it will be built into the Gwent: The Witcher Card Game client. Its purpose is to give the player community control of balancing the card pool. Hence a year from now, the fans’ input will hold authority over the card pool balance.

We have no further details about this new Gwentfinity tool, but it is definitely releasing next year. Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is also big on the Esports scene. There have been many Esports seasons of the game and players get a lot of money from prize pools.

According to the developers, 2023 will also have another Esports season. It will progress throughout the year as usual and end in December of next year. However, this will be the last Esports season of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, which is bittersweet.

A new progression system will also arrive next year. The purpose of this is to keep the card game fresh for when the community takes over. Playing and trying different deck types will be a part of this so players can still do some experimenting.

Even though the popularity of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game has been going down for a few years, it’s sad to see the content cut off. CD Projekt Red is not going to support it anymore, but fans taking the reins isn’t bad. Hopefully, the card game has a better future in store for it.
