Todd Howard, the man behind the development of the famous game series Elder Scrolls and director of Bethesda Game Studios, gave a detailed interview with Lid Friedman.

In the interview, he talked in detail about the new Indiana Jones game, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls. He also touched on the subject of the studio’s upcoming game Starfield, revealing key details about it.

MAJOR TAKEAWAYS

  • Todd Howard, the Director of Bethesda, talked in-depth about Starfield during an interview with Lid Friedman, revealing key details about the game.
  • He said that the 1000-planet limit was due to each planet having unique names and environments.
  • The game’s setting will be deeply human with robots being one of the major enemies.
  • He said delaying the game was tough but necessary as it become “The Game” and it is important to deliver on fans’ expectations.
  • Starfield will be released in the first half of 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.

He revealed that each of Starfield’s planets will have a unique environment and “a different feel” and that each of the planets will have distinct names. He said that was the reason behind setting the planet limit at 1000 otherwise they are fully capable of increasing the limit.

He further said that each of the planets will be placed in orbits in different systems, 40 in total, and each with varying levels of difficulty. The players traveling between those planets won’t be stranded in space as that, in the opinion of Todd, is a “fun-killer.” He said such things should be reserved for a hardcore mode.

He said the players will have the option to choose buffs for their suits. Each of those buffs will have unique abilities to save players from dangerous environments, temperatures, and toxic gases.

He further said that Starfield “will be a deeply human world” with robots being the main enemies. Robots will also be useful to humans in doing day-to-day work.

Other than the players’ own ship, other ships will also dock and come to and forth from starports. He said they are still undecided on what “the tone of space travel should be.” The players will also be able to mine fuel from planets.

Talking about the delays and development of Starfield he said it was tough but the right thing to do. He said there are high stakes for the game has become much more than just a Bethesda game. It is now an Xbox game as well, with Xbox developers assisting in its development.

According to Todd, developing the game for PlayStation 5 in addition to Xbox would have made their job a bit complicated. So Starfield being an Xbox exclusive helps them to focus more on the game’s development to meet Xbox’s needs and deliver the best product to fans.

Starfield is an upcoming action-RPG video game based in space. Announced in 2018, the game has been in development since 2015. The game was scheduled to be released on 11 November this year but got postponed to at least the first half of 2023. The game is Bethesda studio’s first IP in over two decades.

Microsoft and Xbox have bet heavily on Starfield. They surely wish to make it a showcase game for Xbox just like Halo was back in the day.

Starfield will be released in the first half of 2023 for PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

Will Starfield be able to reenact Halo’s success? Discuss in the comments below.
