God Of War Developer Could Be Developing A Sci-Fi Game Next, Reveals Alanah Pearce

Will this be a new IP or something related to an existing brand?

Story Highlights

  • Santa Monica Studio writer Alanah Pearce recently uncovered that she is working on a sci-fi game in her new podcast.
  • Pearce revealed this when she replied “same” to Mike Bithell saying he was writing a game for a sci-fi franchise.
  • Hence, this Santa Monica sci-fi title could be a new IP or a major license.

God of War developer Santa Monica Studio could be leaving the mythos behind and working on a new sci-fi game if Alanah Pearce is to be believed. While talking on the Play, Watch, Listen podcast, the studio’s writer let slip in a one-word reply that she is currently working on a sci-fi title. Considering how Cory Barlog previously disclosed that the studio was working on several things, this sci-fi project could very well be one of them.

Pearce revealed this info on the Play, Watch, Listen podcast, which she hosts alongside Mike Bithell and the legendary Troy Baker. Around the 24:37 mark, Bithell talks about writing for a game currently in the works based on an unspecified sci-fi franchise. In response to this, the Santa Monica Studio writer lets out a laugh and says “Same.”

For sure, this is a pretty small interaction and could be banter, but a branded sci-fi title isn’t such an outlandish idea for the PlayStation studio. Cory Barlog, one of Santa Monica Studios’ most important developers, left God of War Ragnarok to Eric Williams as he was busy working on another project. When you factor in how he is a big Marvel fan, things do start to make a little sense.

Of course, this is just an assumption, and the sci-fi game (if true) could be a brand-new IP. But, considering how Marvel and Sony have a pretty good relationship due to Spider-Man and Insomniac is developing Wolverine, another PlayStation studio getting a shot at a Marvel IP doesn’t seem far-fetched. In addition, another key Sony developer working on a Marvel game could be a perfect way to make gaming’s MCU under the PS brand.

But, this is just a theory as of now and only time will tell what kind of game we see from Santa Monica Studio. For all we know, the developer could be taking Kratos on a new adventure related to the genre. No doubt, that is very unlikely, but Eric Williams did say the studio will keep working on God of War projects in the future. Stranger things have happened in the world of gaming, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Whatever this project turns out to be, we can be sure it is in good hands with the God of War Ragnarok developer. Santa Monica Studio’s latest game broke all kinds of records when it came out back in November 2022. It reached its initial sales target in just under a week and has since sold over 11 million copies worldwide on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

Moreover, God of War Raganrok’s critical reception has not been a secret for anyone, with many considering it 2022’s Game of the Year. The Santa Monica Studio action-adventure title got the most nominations in BAFTA Game Awards history. If the upcoming sci-fi title written by Alanah Pearce is anything like Ragnarok, which she helped develop, fans are in for a treat.
