One genre of gaming that has had a meteoric rise in popularity recently, is Japanese role-playing games. Commonly known as JRPGs, this niche of role-playing titles has taken over the world in the past decades or so. Franchises like Persona, Chrono Trigger, and the modern Soul Hackers have elevated the genre to prominence in the modern era.
Another series that has played a role in this rise of popularity is Shin Megami Tensei. One of the most popular JRPGs of all time, the franchise from Atlus has a cult following all around the world. Now, the most recent three games in the series are coming to Xbox according to a reliable leaker.
Major Takeaways
- Shin Megami Tensei III, IV, and V are coming to Xbox according to Shpeshal Nick.
- There is no timeline as to when they would launch on the platform, but the agreement is a big deal for Xbox according to the insider.
- Says it’s similar to the one Xbox made with Persona, and that took more than a year.
Industry insider Shpeshal Nick is responsible for breaking this news. While talking on the XboxEra Podcast, the leaker informed us of this brand-new info. And if what he said turns out to be true, we will experience Shin Megami Tensei on Xbox soon.
Nick said that Microsoft looks to have done another “deal” with Atlus after he talked about Persona 5. The insider was careful in choosing his words while talking about this info. What he said about Shin Megami Tensei was this:
Microsoft is looking to do a similar deal to Persona, which is to bring Shin Megami Tensei III, IV, and V to Xbox.”
As Nick isn’t a big JRPG fan, he didn’t know what platforms these games were originally available on. But it is a big deal as none of these have been released on Xbox previously. Shin Megami Tensei III came out only on PlayStation 2 originally.
In 2020, an HD Remaster of the game launched on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows. However, this was the last mainline entry in the central series to release on multiple platforms. Shin Megami Tensei IV was only released on the Nintendo 3DS and no other home consoles.
The next game in the series, Shin Megami Tensei V, followed a pattern similar to its predecessor. It is the most recent game in the series and only came out on the Nintendo Switch in November of 2021. So, no home consoles have got the recent two games in the franchise.
As a result, Microsoft making a deal with Atlus and putting them on Xbox consoles will be a brilliant piece of business. Nick talked more about this and how the Shin Megami Tensei games will come to the console. He said it could be through the Xbox Game Pass, but he doesn’t know:
Wheter that includes a Game Pass deal i don’t know, and i have learned after Neon White not to speculate.”
If you don’t know, Shpeshal Nick speculated that Neon White could be arriving on Xbox Game Pass soon. But, developer Annapurna Interactive denied this rumor just a week after it spread. So, he is being a bit careful about predicting what titles arrive on Game Pass.
The insider also talks about when this deal could come to fruition bringing Shin Megami Tensei to Xbox. Nick said he has no idea when the game will release on Xbox as Atlus aren’t really speedy developers. His exact quote went as follows:
Also in terms of timelines again i don’t know. Look how long Persona took, Atlus aren’t super speedy developers this could be a little while away.”
Nick talks about Persona at the start too because he broke the news back in 2021. But, Persona 5 did not release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One until October 2022. Hence, this port might take a similar amount of time as the Persona one, according to Nick.
One thing he is sure of though is that it is a similar deal to Persona 3, 4, and 5, which are all coming to Xbox. He also went on to say that his sources quote this is a big deal for Microsoft. Knowing the cult following Shin Megami Tensei has, we have to agree:
It is a similar deal to Persona 3, 4, and 5. Got told this is a pretty big deal for them (Xbox), to get these games across.”
Persona 3 and 4 are also coming to Xbox consoles in January of next year. So, if all goes to plan, we will see Shin Megami Tensei on our Xbox consoles very soon. Hopefully, it doesn’t take a year or two because we can’t wait to play the games on our Xbox.
