Story Highlights

  • The Star Citizen community has raised $593 million to develop Star Citizen and Squadron 42.
  • Star Citizen, the space exploration game has been in development since 2011 and has been crowdfunded since 2012.
  • The game is one of the highest crowdfunded projects of all time.

Star Citizen and its sister title Squadron 42 have been in development for seemingly forever. The multiplayer space simulator is probably one of the most ambitious games of all time, and it is also one of the most expensive. According to Star Citizen’s website, the game has raised $593 million in crowdsourcing funds, from over 4 and a half million backers.

Star Citizen fundraising as of July 3rd, 2023

This is a project that began development 12 years ago in 2011. The game started fundraising on Kickstarter in 2012, and since then there has been no lack of funds from the community. The Star Citizen community is loyal and has deep pockets.

For a game this costly, you would expect a full release date although there is none, and there likely will be no full release for quite a few years. The game is still in Alpha and can be played in early alpha access by purchasing starter packages, some of which will set you back thousands of dollars.

Squadron 42 is also nowhere to be seen. Squadron 42 is a standalone single-player title based in the universe of Star Citizen and will be released as a separate game. The developers at Roberts Space Industries have put their budget to work, as Squadron 42 will include an impressive cast of actors, including Mark Hamil, Andy Serkis, and Gary Oldman.

With nearly 600 million in funding, Star Citizen is likely not only the most expensive video game ever developed but the most expensive media property in history. Time will tell if Star Citizen and Squadron 42 release anytime soon, both are likely years off with no full release in sight. While we wait In the meantime, I will enjoy playing Starfield
