Thanks to Starfield’s official Twitter account, we now know that Bethesda‘s upcoming space RPG may have been rated Mature by the ESRB. It’s worth noting that the rating comes from the official account but there has been no official announcement yet. While the account clearly shows the rating, Bethesda’s official website offers no information regarding the situation.
The elements that contributed to Starfield‘s Mature rating are “blood, violence, suggestive themes, strong language, and use of drugs.” If you’ve been following Starfield for some time, you may have heard that Australia gave a Restricted rating to it citing the interactive use of drugs in the title. The drug use factor ended up being the highest-rated element leading to the 18+ rating.
Starfield is an action role-playing game presumably set for launch this year if the development goes according to plan. The game is a space fantasy set in an area extending outward from the Solar System called The Settled Systems. The premise of the story involves a war between two factions 20 years prior to the start of the game. Players will take control of a customizable character, a member of the Constellation group.
As of now, the information for Starfield is relatively sparse. The rating hasn’t been officially announced by Bethesda and while it may appear on their Twitter banner, it’s a better approach to await confirmation. Furthermore, Starfield results in zero search results when you go to ESRB’s official website. This can suggest several possibilities which is why confirmation in some form would be best.
On the other hand, some fans of the upcoming space RPG have been concerned about its situation due to Redfall’s unfortunate state. The vampire-themed FPS game from Arkane Studios‘ Austin, Texas branch was one of Xbox’s highly anticipated exclusives. However, it left a lot to be desired due to its lack of polish, bland world and visual design, subpar AI, and stiff gameplay.
While concern for Starfield in light of Redfall is warranted and understandable, it would be wise to look forward to Xbox’s summer showcase. More information on Starfield is to be shown during the event and Microsoft is aware of the situation as well.
Starfield is set to release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC on September 6, 2023.
